Suggested Material for Further Reading and Sourcing

Now I've been involved in GW games seriously since around 2nd edition of Warhammer 40k (1993-94) and never really got into the Warhammer Fantasy Battles system. Although I did like all the models. And so in 1995 when Warhammer Quest came out we picked up a copy. But only played it occasionally (40k & Necromunda was serious business don't ya know)
And so it was relegated to the shelves for a few years (read decade) as College, Children and career pushed out most of the gaming (or in this case big scale gaming).

Flash forward to 2005 to present. I have been slowly rebuilding (em-massing?) a large amount of the subsequent articles, parts, expansion figures, etc for WHQ and now that I own most of it I have been really interested in fleshing out my limited bestiary & actually just background fluff in general.

So this is my long way around for me asking you, fellow WHQ Enthusiasts/obsessives and game lovers... what GW books would you suggest for me to get that would be of particular interest in this area. Should I be delving into 3rd edition (WHFB) material? Or is 4th-5th enough? What would you find invaluable in both terms of fluff and ideas for campaigns/scenarios and just raw material.
  WHFB 4th Edition Bestiary?

 Any input is welcome.

 Thank you.
~Will

ps.

And you don't know how bad I am kicking myself for not buying up alot of the Bestiary table miniatures before GW completely phased out their Mail Order and trimmed all the fantasy races to the bare minimum...

But I remain vigilant and will finish a core of the figure ranges I started to build years ago. (most remain viable via e-bay at descent prices).

 And a further note:

I've been also picking up a lot of Mordheim based stuff too. And plan to cross-pollinate them into WHQ(mainly miniatures). For example Johan the Knife will be an Assassin template in WHQ. Alot of Skaven(period specific) to pick from here as well.

I have Johan the Knife as well - you're right, a great Assassin model!

I'm assuming that you're the William on BGG, so i won't bother you with redundant answers.

You might also want to post that question on the Warhammer Quest fanpage. We have a lot of people knowledgeable in that area. I'm sure they could recommend.

Hello Will,

I heartily recommend Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay books if you can find them at decent prices. The 2nd edition published by the Black Library particularly had a lot of ideas. My favorite books in general for atmospheric fluff and craziness:

-WFRP 2nd Edition main book
-Tome of Sorcery (I like both 1st and 2nd)
-Tome of Corruption (all sorts of chaos stuff, including d1000 charts for mutations!)

I'm extremely disappointed that GW has pulled the plug on their archive minis. I was finally in a mood to start collecting those again and now the Mordheim figs are now very expensive or impossible to find.

That just happened in the past 2 months.

I put off getting Highway man and the Cart... luckily I snagged up everything else...

You can... if you are patient... land them on ebay for very close to the original retail price.

Re: Suggested Material for Further Reading and Sourcing

Was a HUGE change for me having worked in both the Baltimore and the Glen Burnie, MD offices.
Go away from GW and its games for a little over a decade and then find them in Memphis, TN?
What the heck happened?!?

And it seems like no one I knew in Glen Burnie is still with them!

And they no longer spin metal in the Western Hemisphere?!?
What's with that?!?
I fondly remember the employee discount on loose metal back in the day and cringe heavily looking at the retail prices of the figures these days.

Moreover, what is with the books/codices these days!
Is more than doubling the cost really worth it to get an all colour interior and a hard cover?
I am not sold on it.
I wait and get them on eBay for the price of the old books/codices.
Granted, that does not always work well; I won an auction for a Tomb Kings book at $15.50 and the guy refused to sell it to me because the price was too low for his taste; and what beats all was that eBay refused to do anything to him because it was the first time he was selling anything!
That is the same mentality that makes over spanking a child to get it to change its ways into child abuse these days.
Any way, I just moved on to a less spoiled seller after a while to get that book.

I too would recommend the WFRPG books of the Black Library/Green Ronin second edition as resources.
Just be patient for a reasonable price; some of the seriously useful books as to what is where can have absolutely mind blowing prices!
Seriously, there are folks asking commonly for over $100US for a book if not hundreds of dollars.
It is just like hunting game; you do not shoot the first beast coming by; you have patience and wait for the quality beastie.

I would not forget the GW first editions either for cool maps and such.
Not the Hogshead WFRPG first editions, but the GW ones.

Vespero is also a good Assassin figure.
I have the figure catalogues here that cover since the late '80s.
I still drool over some of the figures from back then time to time.
Miss the day of just dialing up GWUK from GWUS and having seriously archival figures arrive on the next monthly air freight shipment from the UK.

You guys thinking acquiring Mordheim minis is hard these days, try getting some of the really cool late '80s Chaos Warriors.
Talk about a near snipe hunt!
And then you always have to control your breathing when you find a figure you want; otherwise, the guy jacks up the price a few hundred percent above what he thought was a fair price before you showed up!
