How do you Generate Monsters?

Well, in reference to surviving dungeons, I am thinking that the difficulty of monsters faced is very likely to affect this issue.

I have thought that most people use the Dungeon Event Cards to generate when a Monster Event happens (as the rules instruct), but that people would also then follow the RolePlay Book and roll on the Monster Tables provided there (for Battle-Level 2 and higher at least), but it seems this is not always the case.

I have mentioned before that I developed my own special monster table for Level 1 Warriors only for their first Adventure (which table is comparable in difficulty to the actual cards provided in the game). But, from their second Adventure onwards I have usually used the Monster Tables provided in the RolePlay Book.

I am interested to know how the rest of you generate monsters. For one thing, these types of discussions sometimes gives me more inspiration for my own games.

Lvl 1-2: Stay with the original cards.
Never found a reason not; they were designed well.

After that and after buying lots of blank card blisters (maybe not lots - I think only 12 - maybe - and all back in the day before the current inflated prices at eBay and elsewhere), go with what feels good and use the Tables to show you what is appropriate.
I ALWAYS try to go with just a bit challenging; "cake walks" are boring!

The most interesting adventures are themed at very least; storied are better.
The "Dead Wizard's 'Zoo'" is always a tried and true one for me.
Wizard collected the wrong "animal" (Minotaur Lord, Beastman Shaman, Bull Centaur Lord, Dragon Ogre Hero, something intelligent), it broke free and killed said wizard, and the municipality in which said wizard's abode/lair/whatever is located has hired your party to go clean out said wizard's facility before the denizens of said facility clean out said municipality.
Too much legalese? emoticon
As the Warriors get more developed, the denizens are changed to be more challenging.

Now with all of my personal adventurers being at Lvl7, none of the monsters are worth less than 450g.
I do try to limit the monsters chosen in the number of monster Magic Armour/Items/Weapons they have.
D6=6 Monsters with three each means you are managing 18 magical things at once and that is if none of the other monsters pulled up have any themselves.
Once an Objective Room (I almost always use the Dread King's Throne Room for the zoo) had monsters with 94 magical things for me to manage and play against at once because I went for challenging monsters and did not pay attention to how many magical toys they had.
That was not so much fun so I have managed the possible monsters much more carefully since while still trying to keep it challenging.
Said intelligent "animal" though always gets their full amount of magical toys.

Of course, there are the "bad guy" race dungeons.
I have found The Catacombs of Terror charts to be worth their weight.
Someone at the Studio was smart and farsighted and took the charts all the way to Lvl10.
Lair of the Orc Lord not so much - only Lvl5, but they do indeed show the complexity a race can inspire in the possibilities.
I am thinking that the Lvl10 chart could have been five pages in size with the fact that Lvl4-5 was two complete pages.
Granted here, the Studio was including cavalry like wolf and boar riders, but they had not yet started with spider riders so there was more fun to be had.
Any way, these two sets of charts can help inspire charts and then cards for the other "bad guys" for you.

Any way, what ever you do to generate your monsters, remember to ALWAYS transfer the data to cards.
The cards are always tons more fun than juggling any charts!

I don't use the cards ever.
I use them to see E or M in the corner to denote if it is monsters (roll on table) or event (roll on table).

I was under the impression when you roll monsters with magical items all monsters of the same group (single monster roll) have the same items?

so if I roll necromancer, wight lord and some skeletons the necromancer and wight lord will have the same magic weapon.
this becomes important at higher levels, as you rightly point out.

although it does mean a harsh combo is very harsh indeed, but there you go.

I pretty much play every dungeon as a randomly generated one from scratch, I don't play pre-gen dungeons as we play the advanced but non-roleplay game

most of my posts may run into essay length. I find that for a lot of queries/feedback context is important and that is why this happens more often than not.

have a great day :D

I hit the wrong key so all of what I wrote vanished.
I am not bothering to try to redo it.

You did not read what I wrote here before.
Or you cannot comprehend what I wrote.
Or you are just striving for contention.

I think you would not enjoy playing WHQ with me and vice versa.
I will strive to avoid that.

I think Edquest may have been responding to the original post?

Did not seem to be with what Old Warrior wrote.
Did seem to be taking me to task with what I wrote and then what he wrote.

Re: How do you Generate Monsters?

Well, as I understand the words written, Edquest did seem to be responding to my original post. I was asking "how do you generate monsters?" Part of my reason was to help us realize that this in at least some measure affects the survivability of an Adventure.

I remember one game that I GMed, in which I used the Level 1 Monster Table in the RolePlay Book for a brand new party of Warriors. They never made it to the first room. An Unexpected Event happened in a corridor, but a 11 or 66 was rolled, which lead to a higher monster table result of Chaos Warriors! The party were surrounded and had very little that could hurt the Chaos Warriors. They all died in that first combat and/or while trying to use the Escape Table.

But, in regards to the idea that Edquest might have been purposefully contentious, I would like to emphasize that I did not see that in his post.

For some reason this reminds me of an experience I had this week at work. Because I was more frustrated and more misunderstood (apparently anyway) than usual, and my coworker seemed to be "mad" at me, I felt down for one or two whole days. That was the length of time that I worked while that same coworker had a day or two off.

The next time I saw this same coworker, which was today (20th of March), he was joking and laughing with me as always before he had done. He apparently had no serious problem with me, but I rather imagined that he did. My own feelings betrayed me.

I said all that to say, it is often easy to think someone is attacking us personally, when in reality they might not intend this at all.

Perhaps if we as members of this message board think of ourselves as "all on the same team" and not in competition with one another, it will be easier to see that we just approach issues from different viewpoints.

Remember, the monsters are our enemies, not our fellow Warriors. emoticon

EDIT: I corrected the statement about rolling 11 or 66. Originally, I thought the Chaos Warriors had to be level 3, but then I saw that they are in the level 2 table.

You mean this is a WHQ forum, not a Munchkin one?
There are times I really wonder. emoticon

Re: How do you Generate Monsters?

Way back when I was introduced to the game, I think our WHQ guru started us out with playing the basic game once just so we could get the idea how things worked...after that, it was Advanced Game all the way.

For the longest time, we played the Advanced Game in the same way as the book prescribed: draw a Dungeon Card. If it is a monster, roll on the table in the book; if it is an event, roll on the Event Table in the book.

Later on after my WHQ guru friend moved on and we had less chance to play, I bought WHQ. I altered the level 1 table to remove the 11 and 66 and made some other minor adjustments, eventually putting them all in card form. I also added some custom monster events that would sometimes spring two groups on monsters instead of one (like a goblin shaman and the next goblin card). I have only played it once and it worked pretty well...although many more pays would be needed to see how the balance it.
