2- play only with cards?

Re: Combined Event/Monster table
2) Cards.
Tables are only references to make cards from.
Without it being just on cards, what makes this game really any different from D&D, Pathfinder and the rest of that ilk and everything similar.
They all have tables too.
D&D & others have tiles so it is not the tiles that makes WHQ different.
Playing on the cards sets WHQ apart from all the rest.

Re: Combined Event/Monster table
With cards, i think, you have the better opportunity to customize your event deck for the adventure, that you playing.
For example, my group plays an adventure, that leads into a cursed bog. For preparation i wrote 7 Event cards. 3 with events for the swamp ( for example the heroes get struck into swamp and must free them, simultaneously fighting evil spirits) and 4 Monster cards, which included 3 new monster types, the heroes will encounter in the bog.
Then i have taken the regular event cards from the WQ Game and take 12 event cards (7 Monster, 5 Events),which can potentially happen in the adventure.
If your heroes have a high battle level, than you can roll on the tables, if you draw a monster card. With this way i can easily adjust the card deck for my adventures.

Re: Combined Event/Monster table
I like the idea of a combined events and monster table...but have already made a D100 table for events and we have not had all of those yet!
personally I use cards only to signify monster or event.
as a player of D&D and a few other games of that ilk I can safely say the usual way of playing is no tables to randomly determine encounters.
that is a style that does exist, but is pretty archaic nowadays, those games are normally entirely set-piece combats.
occasionally you want to throw something at players for doing stupid things, they love those things, but even that is often a scripted encounter that is simply not planned to happen without aforementioned stupid actions.
what I think marks WHQ as separate is not the monster generation system (card generation is in fact used in 4th edition D&D as an option if you have no DM) nor the combat system as it is effectively copied and pasted over from warhammer, but more in the "feel" of the game.
certainly with the plethora of RPG's on the market I don't think an original mechanic would be easy to work out
(the most original was for a game called deadlands which used dice, playing cards and poker chips and a truly wildly varying character creation system, but I digress...)
--- most of my posts may run into essay length. I find that for a lot of queries/feedback context is important and that is why this happens more often than not.
have a great day :D

Re: Combined Event/Monster table
What is a gamemaster screen but a bunch of tables?
I have seen them for D&D and all sorts of other games of that and similar ilk!

It depends. If it is a adventure we prepared for (scenario with a properly described monster/event pool) we use cards.
If it is a simple 'hey, lets play tonight!' random dungeon without DM, we use tables.
The to things are a different systems, althou tables did give us some pretty 'themed' dungeons (it was all demons last night )
