Displacer Beast

Displacer Beast

Displacer Beasts are large cat-like creatures with six legs and a pair of long tentacles sprouting from their shoulders. Legends say they spawned from a time when old twisted magic from the Dark Elves of Darkalf Heim corrupted the Old World and Norsca lands. They are covered in a pelt of blue-black fur as a light-bending glamor continuously surrounds the Displacer Beast, using their innate magic to bend light, making them appear to be a square or two from their actual positions. They have an abnormally high resistance towards Magic Spells through a fluke of genetics, resulting in some to grow enormous in size. Known as Pack Lords, they are the natural leaders of Displacer Beast packs.

Displacement: Displacer Beasts have a unique skill that affects the way it can be hit and take damage. All Missile Attacks including Magic against a Displacer Beast are at a -2 To Hit or cast. When a ranged attack hits the Displacer Beast, if the player rolled an odd number on the BS roll, the attack misses. If the player rolled an even number on the BS roll, the attack hits as normal, revealing the exact location of the beast. The Displacer Beast loses this skill until the start of the next Turn.
This is the nature of the Displacer Beast; it may not really be in that square. After taking any damage, the Displacer Beast will phase out, moving D3 squares in a random direction that has available squares. The Warrior may continue their remaining attacks against the target Displacer Beast if able or change to attack a new target.

Displaced Movement: When moving, the Displacer Beast will teleport D6 squares making it Never Pinned.

Immune Attack Spells: Displacer Beasts are immune to direct assaults from low level magic as indicated.

Instinctive Blitz: At the start of each Monster’s Phase roll a D6 for the Displacer Beast, on a 5+ it feels another random Warrior is a bigger threat and will chose to attack him instead.

Tentacles : As the Displacer Beast ages, the two long spiked tentacles laced with poison tips become developed over time from being able to pick up light objects to the Pack Lords actually wielding weapons. They each have Attack with Ranks and Poison, causing 2D6 + Strength damage and the same overall Toughness. Pack Lords attacking with weapons will cause the Magic Weapon’s damage as indicated + Strength.

no comments on this unorthodox monstrosity of a d&d conversion? it basically displaces when hit and is hard to hit from a distance.

I like anytime someone tries to create custom creatures. (especially iconic D&D creatures)

IMO

I think I would make the Young Beast less powerful (therefore less expensive) that way you could encounter them in a greater spread of levels.

Also I think you can simplify the Displacement and combine it with Displaced movement by making it more like Ethereal. For example...

Displacement N
Such Monsters can never be pinned, and may move freely through other Monsters and obstacles as if they weren't there. In addition, when making an attack with a non-magical weapon against such a creature, your Warrior's to hit rolls are
reduced hy n. where n is the number after the Displacement entry.
Attacks with magic weapons are made as normal. If a creature with Displacement is hit, it loses the Displacement to hit modifier till the end of turn.

With this, there is no need for Instinctive Blitz because creatures that aren't pinned always choose new targets at the beginning of turn.

Thats my 2 cents.

Re: Displacer Beast

i think as above regarding the displacement thing, I actually think it is too complicated for WHQ.

my main concern with the pack lord is it is a monster worth 5000 gold with 75 wounds and only Toughness of 7 which means it will probably not get a turn beyond it's ambush attack.
compare this to a dragon (wounds 74, total toughness, armour and ignore pain of 19 I think) greater daemons of any variety that is not khorne (wounds 70+ and total toughness scores of over 18 too)

so I think it is over valued in this sense.
the addition of magic weapons I like to keep it varied.
the poison I do not like due to the damage output potential, but for the pack lord I could make an exception as the pinnacle monster (great unclean one does plague after all)
compare the weakest one 2400 gold to the chimera for example and it will be killed a whole lot quicker.

---
most of my posts may run into essay length. I find that for a lot of queries/feedback context is important and that is why this happens more often than not.

have a great day :D
