The Friar
- THE FRIAR CHARACTER -
‘Fear not, my brothers and sisters. These hardships, too, shall pass. Have faith in the gods, so they might have faith in you.’ - Career Compendium
My initial concept for this character was to present a European themed Monk as counterpart to the Eastern Martial Arts Monk. My research included the Monastic lifestyle, Trappist’s, the Brotherhood
of St Gregory, history of Monks Bread made back home in the Finger Lakes of NY, and the culling of original Warhammer Quest, and Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay material; which is graciously copied and pasted throughout in ‘Casablanca Antique’where appropriate and always with source listed.
This Warrior is based around Friar Tuck of Robin Hood legend. My write up is mostly inspired by what I wanted to see in the Warrior. The Friar as a beer loving, punch throwing, food protecting, falling off the wagon of spirituality holy man. These
images reminded me of Friar Tuck as portrayed by Mark Addy in Robin Hood and Mike McShane in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. The resulting Warrior is as faithful a blending of my research and
the various source material as I can muster.
You can find the Friar, presented in standard warrior pack format, in my Dropbox here

Re: The Friar
Moved to Custom Rules & Projects.
Nice job, BrianBird.
Here is some criticism. Don't take it too personally, as it's late and i'm just jotting down the first thing that comes to mind. Feel free to elucidate on any of the points i have brought up. And keep up the good work! It's a great start!
----------
First off, I think a 4+ Pinning is a bit high. I think 5+ for this rotund, beer drinking monk would be more appropriate. (Your Battle-level Table lists him at 5+ starting out)
Initiative 4 seems a little high too. The Dwarf is a 2 and the Barbarian is a 4.
Why list “basic brown robes” unless they actually do something?
The Friar will start with these Equipment cards as dictated by their Saint. This equipment reflects the trade good produced by the members of his order and the benefit they infer. (confer?)
“Improv item” doesn’t sound very Warhammer Quest-like.
Roll a d6, on a 1-2 he has broken it, and after the event must visit the Abbey, if there is one. He faces no other Events and cannot visit any other Locations. If however, he rolls a 6 he has managed to turn the event into a homily lesson and instead gains 5 gold as an offering to his Saint. – give this guy a bigger reward for rolling a 6! It's not like he has a choice!
- Convert Gold or Magical Items to experience points- it cannot be spent but cannot be lost to hazards, either. – “what is this experience points” you speak of?
St Berndt
Investing time into creating robes, after 4 visits over as many weeks, they are of such quality they are Pallium Robes. – 4 weeks?? For 2 Wounds that are gone after they are taken? You expect everyone to roll for Catastrophic Events TWICE for that??
St Cyril
The best Trappist cheese takes more time. After 4 weeks, the cheese will grant 1d3 Strength for a Turn – same issue
11-12
Encoded Message
You decipher a coded message of the Thieves Guild, has hidden in a grand tale of adventure. Roll on the Adventure Table – think this needs to be reworded. And what is this “Adventure Table” you speak of??
10 - Staff Fighter
The Friar can use either end of the staff to attack. Its length and versatility allows the Friar to make an extra Attack each round with this weapon as long as all attacks are at -1 to hit. The Friar will no longer benefit from his Toughness bonus for the rest of the Turn. – why not just let the Friar keep the +1 bonus? He’s a Staff Fighter now and he should be able to use it for both Offense and Defense simultaneously.
On the Warrior table, I noticed that the Friar’s BS is “automatic” at level 9-10. Did you mean 1+? And is he really as good as an Elf with a Bow? Even the Elf is 2+ at Level 9. I find that a little incredible for a fat monk to be THAT good with a bow? And the Barbarian maxes out at Weapon Skill 6, while the Monk is 7! What?
Be careful being too awesome with the stats. It’s an easy thing to do – trust me! We all want to make our creation the BEST! But you have to balance him.

Re: The Friar
the time taken to make stuff is too long.
his BS is less of an issue when you note that his damage dice don't go above 2, which means at level 9 and 10 the number of enemies that he cannot hurt will be considerable.
normal warriors start with a WS and end with a WS 3 higher (so barbarian WS3 ends with WS 6, elf 4 and 7 etc.) this is all from Warhammer fantasy battles and I tend to stick with it, there are two exceptions (chaos warriors obviously and the wardancer) which work fine for different reasons.
I think his skills section are actually pretty weak, one of them seems to give +1 toughness for one turn per adventure, but can be gained additional times for extra uses. i'd look at making that once per combat, or even just +1T cannot learn more than once.
personally I wouldn't just borrow skills from other warriors unless there is some direct similarity: elves having a dodge is great, the noble having dodge works as he is a warrior of the "nimble" variety, but I wouldn't want a barbarian or knight with it, the friar feels odd with a similar skill too.
possibly look over the brewmaster warrior for inspiration? that warrior has some similarities to this one.
--- most of my posts may run into essay length. I find that for a lot of queries/feedback context is important and that is why this happens more often than not.
have a great day :D

I usually picture a Friar as being rather rotund.
