Elf Ranger Mage and Large Monsters


We've reached the higher level dungeons (8th!) in our weekly game and we now regularly face "Large Monsters".

"Large Monster" rule says It takes an extra power equal to the Dungeon level to cast spells against.

How does this apply to a Ranger Mage?
Normally extra power cost translates as -1 to cast... But at level 8, -8 on the dice is kinda silly!!

Gonna house rule it as level/2 penalty - but does anyone else have a better way to handle it? emoticon

Very good question. I guess I have never really faced this one yet in my gaming -- never had a high level Elf Ranger encounter with a Large Monster! I must play this character more, since he is one of my favorites!

i have just played it is no different.

regular wizard still has plenty of other advantages, like unlimited number of casts per turn.

large monster does other things too.

at that level a large number of encounters also have high level casters each with chances to Dispel spells so have at it while you can!

most of my posts may run into essay length. I find that for a lot of queries/feedback context is important and that is why this happens more often than not.

We tend to forget the large monster as an ability emoticon but in general we add/subtract all modifiers to/from the dice roll to see if the spell succeds. That way you can also use wizard items that stores power etc.

Everyone always forgets this rule!

I always implement the same as any other modifier like Fear or Terror. i.e. apply a dungeon level modifier to the casting roll, which basically always means the ERM can only ever succeed on a natural 6. This seems to be both the intent and balanced to me.

A BL 10 wizard gets up to 16 power a turn, which would allow him to cast 1 level 6 spell against a DL 10 Large Monster.

A BL 10 ERM gets 4 x 6+ attempts (even with a power roll of 1!) to cast any spell he wishes against the same Monster, so will get to cast a spell most turns.

a level 10 wizard will have 16 power if a 6 is rolled.

except: all the items of stored power, free casts, reduced cost of spells and his chalices of sorcery.

realistically i have never seen a wizard not have almost unlimited power at a high level.

in fact at level 6 a wizard who had been stiffed in the last 2 dungeons by players acting like dicks became the lantern bearer and cleared most of the dungeon alone.

once you're looking at level 8+ most encounters bring dispels and that sorts him out.

i don't think the ERM/ERK needs further penalising beyond the only being able to cast 3 or 4 spells at maximum
