posticon Monster Table Program

Hello, I'm new to the Message Board but started playing WQ several years ago. Although I haven't played for awhile. The reason I'm writing this post is, ever since I started playing WQ, I've only had one problem with the game and that is when playing a random dungeon (or even playing a set dungeon with a GM, because you still get random events) all the time waiting for the GM or whoever is controling the Monsters, to figure out What Monsters your fighting, What kind of Weapons and/or Magic Spells and/or Armour and then figuring out What Special abilites or rules you have to play them by. Sometimes this can take a while and can be very boaring and or tedius. And so ever since I started playing I've wanted to come up with a computer program to do all of this for you. Well I finally decided to start on this project about a week and a half ago, and just finished the Level 1 Monster Table tonight. I would like to get some opinions from people who know the game pretty well. The File itself is only 53 KB. I Wrote it with Visual Basic 2.0 so you will need the file VBRUN200.DLL which is only 384 KB. to run it. It's Not very fancy and I haven't added the keyboard commands yet (You have to use the mouse), but my intentions were to cut out as much paper shuffling as possible. Basically, it randomly chooses which monsters you will fight (in the same manner as rolling a D66) and then gives you all the stats on the monster including Special instructions and Armour if any, Spells if any, and which weapons they use. If any one is intrested in trying it out the zip file with both the Level 1 program and the VBRUN200.dll file is only 213 KB I would be happy to email it to if you promise to give me some feedback on it. If you are intrested my E-Mail is [email protected]
Thank You

Thank You for your intrest. Let me try to give a better description. I wrote the program using Microsoft Visual Basic 2.0. So it is a GUI (Graphical User Interface) which means it uses 'popup' windows like most of the programs written for MS Windows. Visual Basic 2.0 was designed for Windows 3.1 so it should run on any windows platform (3.1, 95, NT,98, ME, XP) I have not tested this on anything but Windows 98 Second Edition. but other programs I have written with VB 2.0 I have used on Windows 3.1 and 95 as well as my computer with 98. I was designed for 3.1 so there is no reason it should not run on later versions of windows as long as you have the VBRUN200.DLL file. Click on the Link to see an image of the program.http://manders.20m.com/capture.htm

Add me to the interested list. We normally write out cards for each encounter but this sounds a lot better.

What I am working on now is a Print option. It has always been in the back of my mind to do this. However, last night I realized how useful this could be. I orignally thought about playing with the computer sitting next to you, which could be difficult depending on where you were playing. But then I realized if you just printed out several random monsters encounters without really looking at them, then you could fold up the paper into quarters, label each one for specific rooms like Dungeon cell, Guard Room, Objective room, and a few for Random Monster Events (When the Wizard rolls a 1 on the power phase) then you could just take these sheets with you to where ever you plan on playing. That way they would be all set up and ready to use. Even the Person who printed them would not really have to know what they were.

Re: Monster Table Program

I don't play with a GM. I make my Monster and Event tables before each level based on the strength and abilities of the Warriors.

The last adventure of one campaign involved 3 types of level 6 monsters in the Objective Room, each with their own magic stuff from the tables. It wasn't fun anymore. I therefore worked out simple and advanced tables for Magic Armor, Magic Item, and Magic Weapon. For example, an enemy character (Necromancer) will use the advanced tables, like the ones in the RPG book; his minions use the simple ones (+1 Armor, +1 Attack, +1 to hit). This time when we got to level 6, it was quicker, simpler and fun.

O.K. I made the revision so you can print out the page. Not exactly what I wanted but it works. I had to change the page sizes (made them all the same size) to make room for all the text, but that was one of the suggestions I got from Bruno anyways. He also suggested making the program so the information is in a .TXT file so it could be edited. Or even switched out for a whole new set. Thinking about this it might make it easier. I will have to look into this. Peter suggested a TO HIT Table for the Monsters, and Also showing the Armour Points in with the Toughness Score.

Thanks Guys this helps.

I also decided to throw this program on a Web page for easy downloading. The Web Address is http://magneto_2.tripod.com/whq.htm I also wrote a couple of other programs for WHQ that I put up there also.
A Random Dungeon Generator
A Dungeon Events Generator
and A Dice Roller

I will continue to make revisions to the Monster Table, When I am satisifed with it I will start on Level 2.

Re: Monster Table Program

Thank You, I am glad you like it so far. I am working on Level 2 at the moment, it will work the same as level 1. I tried to rewrite level 1 so as to make it editable,(as suggested by Bruno)however the more I got into it the more I realized how complicated and extensive it would be to make it truly editable in the way I feel it should be. So for now I have gone back to my original plan which is to make it based strickly on the official monster tables. When I finish it I will post it on my website and put a post here letting you know it is available.

OK. I have Finished level 2. It is designed just like level 1. Basiclly I added Level 2 to Level 1 so when you roll an 11 or 66 on level 1 it will take you to level 2, which has an option to return to level 1. When I finish level 3 I will also add a diferent starting page that will let you pick which level you want to start at. I have put it up on the internet at: http://magneto_2.tripod.com/whq.htm If you have used it, let me know what you think.

Thanks
