Game ruiners

Today I gm'ed a dungeon that I had created for a group of friends and I have to say I was amazed at how one person can completly ruin a game of warhammer quest.

Thanks to this one person all four gamers were extremly frustrated and even I was about to die of boredom after 86 turns they finally managed to complete the first deep after 4 hours!!!! So watch out guys one person can completly ruin any game of warhammer quest.

What was the situation?
Don't just tease us like that we want the juicy details What character were they and what did they do? We need to know this sort of thing to avoid/cause it in the future.

Cheers,
Andrew

Re: Game ruiners

Ok this guy was the imperial noble (actually my fave character) and well this guy must have been the wussiest noble ever. Of course to act wussy is completly his choice however i allowed the party to decide who would be the leader now two characters were out of the equation (wizard didnt want to be and the troll slayer well no-one want to be led by someone who is looking to die!!!). So it was down to him and a brettonian knight they couldn't decide so it went to a dice roll which he won.

So they go into this dungeon and after about three rooms we noticed that the guy with the lantern seemed to always be at the back which first off apart from the simple fact that the leader should at least have the decency to lead from the front had the practical effect of slowing the game down completly as he had to reveal the room and extra turns had to be spent reshuffling afterwards now this wouldn't have been a major problem but combined with the wizards inability to roll anything but a 1 for power this one turn reshuffling turned into a 4-6 turn combat at regular points. After this had happened three times the rest of the party had a go at him yet he refused to stop. This was the worst thing and slowed the game down greatly but there were also many other factors such as Him stopping to reload his gun for a turn when he could have been revealing the next room all the time slowing the party down also his part in the combat resulted meerly in picking off monsters on 1 wound and of course the unfair treasure hoarding as we decided beforehand that the leader would distribute treasure (a policy I no longer take) he even went as far as when a a magical sword (slips my memory which one) was found and the party had a go at him and threatened to mutiny if he didn't give it to someone else he gave it to the trollslayer who had to record the gold value before destroying it just to spite everyone else!!!!! but what really took the biscuit was when he had the nerve about three forths of the way through to when it wasn't his turn start playing a game of mordhiem with someone else!!!!! At this point the guy playing the trollslayer lost his patience and pushed his character down a pit of dispair thus killing him unsuprisingly now someone else had the lantern the the game picked up and that was the only reason the dungeon was finished within the 4 hours we had to play it. Although he got his just deserts watch out for ppl and wont be playing in any of my games again like this make sure your playing with ppl who appreciate the game and wish to play in its spirit.

Wow, yeah, we had a player like that in D&D years ago when I used to play. He used to delight in doing things his way just to spite the other players and the DM. Needless to say, suddenly he wasn't invited to any other gaming sessions.

Fortunately, our gaming group does not use the rule that whoever kills the monster gets all the gold. We divy the gold up between players that have actually hurt the monster. Seems fairer. In fact, sometimes when one character seems to be killing everything in site and there is a character that doesn't seem to be able to hit anything, we often tell the other character to step down for a bit and let the other character kill something. hehe, aren't we sweet. Never usually happens, since everyone seems to be a death dealing machine in our party at the moment.

Jerks or sometimes just unfun people can ruin ANY game at any time. I got one for you: My sister a year ago was dating a completely psychopathic guy who claimed to be intellectual: philosophy major, chess addict, gamer, etc... We'll call him "Schmoe".

We noticed that Schmoe had a tendency in D&D and other role-playing games to slice the head off of NPC's and punt them. This tendency did not change no matter his race, alignment, whatever. He had already messed up a couple of my brother's campaigns with A-Hole behavior before my sister tried to run one.

She had picked up for US$15.00 a Diablo-based role-playing dungeon game that was much like Warhammer Quest but with tokens instead of minis. The game comes with five character templates based on the Diablo characters. Since there were six of us in place one night we decided to play with my sister as GM. When Schmoe asked if he could play a Paladin of Khorne "Blood for the Blood God!" my sister agreed (mistake #2, first was playing with Schmoe in the first place). Soon we were off on our way, finding the dying man with the map that pointed towards a dungeon and a quest. Schmoe decapitated the corpse and punted his head.

Later on, after some more bumps, came the funny part. We had just cleared a dungeon room of more monsters and saved the life of a cowering human that had some information. he was too scared to talk (because of Schmoe) so my mother's Sorceress offered her protection. The frightened man finally spilled the beans, at which point Schmoe declared "Blood for the Blood God" and moved to sate his bloodlust with the innocent's head. The Sorceress moved between the two and said "Oh no you don't, I granted him my personal protection!" (This was becoming personal, as my mother was not fond of having a jerk in her house.)

Growling, the twisted Templar of Khorne raised his sword against the Sorceress when all hell broke loose. Gaining Initiative, the wounded Sorceress let loose a small attack spell right in the Khornate's face. My Necromancer, not caring either way, stood aside and watched with grim amusement as the Amazon unhesitatingly nocked an arrow and sent it hurtling into the back of the so-called Paladin's neck.

The Barbarian knew only one thing; he had seen berserkers lose control and go bad many times in his life, and there was only one way to handle such a situation: put them down. "He's gone rogue!!" bellowed the Barbarian as he rushed over to end the conflict. He was too late to stop the Templar from slicing the Sorceress with a strike that luckily did not kill her, but the Templar was soon taken down with a large axe and another arrow in his back.

The Necromancer had not used his "Raise Dead" spell yet, but here was a Paladin, freshly killed. Without hesitating, he asked for and received the gift of Zincarla; raising the body, not as a mere skeleton, but as a walking corpse replete with the powers he had had in his former life.

When Schmoe realised he had not just been killed, but raised as my character's undead thrall, he stalked away to sulk for the remaining hours that we played. When we were done, there was a huge argument that is honestly quite funny to remember, even though it got ugly at times. Basically he was defending all his actions as 'good role-playing' while we were curious why he was doing everything he could to thwart his own girl-friend's game. My own woman had the best line of the night: "Honestly, I thought your character had much more personality as a corpse"

Oh well, the moral of the story is to try and gauge personality types when inviting people to play any game, but especially one that is involved and takes some investment of mental energy. Even if someone is just not in the mood, it can totally drag the atmosphere...

I remember we had a dwarf once who boldly lead the warriors into the battle, then turned and ran as fast as his stubby little legs would take him. He claimed that he'd figured out the answer to a puzzle in a far-off room, and was off to impliment it.
The GM was feeling particularly vindictive, so he kept on dropping lumps of stone until he turned around and wnet back to fight. Freedom of action indeed!
