Miniatures

I love to play WHQ, I think is the best of all the random dungeon crawl games I have ever played, but I have never been able to play with my characters past battle level 2 or 3 because I don't have very many more monster miniatures beyond what came in the box. What kinda miniatures do any of you guys use? I know there is probably alot of Hardcore GW minitures collectors on this forum, but man those can get expensive, especially if you are tryin to get some of the minitures that are not being made for WHQ. This is such a great game you should not have to be rich to enjoy it. Does anyone have any suggestions for cheep alternatives for miniatures. I have thought about trying to find close looking minitures from some of the companies that make pre-painted plastics here in the U.S. but they are all for "collectable" games like Mage Knight and D&D Miniatures and some of the "rare" pieces can be more expensive the the GW stuff. With great reluctance I thought about printing out cardboard figures, but where could I get art/pictures of the WHQ monsters? I would need front and backs so they would at least look 2 sided but flat. I realize most the people won't simpathize with me. I know that Miniature games is a serious money spending hobby for most of the Warhammer crowd, but I'm just a Board Gamer who thinks this is the best Board/RPG type game ever made, and I want my fellow Board Gamer friends to get into it too, but without monsters for higher level adventuring they are not interested. Please Help.

Re: Miniatures

I just use monsters from my colection that are of a similar apearance. A Black Orc can double as an orc boss, a minotaur can be a keeper of secrets (mine have the right paint job anyway) As long as it is a reasonable representitive of what creature it is things are fine.

If however a creature is generated that I dont have a model for I substitute the closest thing I have, so any daemons rolled will be misteriously changed into daemonettes and so on.

Roleplaying is about using your imagination. Use the minitures you have as best you can, and if you want to, gradually increase your collection a little bit at a time.

eBay has many opportunities to purchase big lots of used minatures - sometimes painted, sometimes not - for far below the retail prices.

If you want to use cardboard cut outs (good idea - I never thought to do that), then try making your own pictures of what YOU think the beasties should look like. It's a great opportunity to be creative.

And,if your friends only want to play if you buy exactly the right models, then get some new friends who want to have a good time and can use their imaginations. emoticon

I think it would be pretty ridicuolous to attempt to own all the miniatures in the monster tables - I believe it would cost in the region of £3K!!

But, you can often pick stuff up for about half price on ebay, or, if you don't need a whole set (e.g. you don't need 16 dark elves as sold in boxed set) buy a set and flog the rest.

I have no intention of buying the whole shabang- I'm going to get the stuff I'd like to paint, and re-roll any other results!

Re: Miniatures

Thanks for all the advice. I like the idea of doing my own art for my cardboard miniatures but unfortunenatly I can barley draw stick figures. Also like many of you that frequent this site I am in love with Mystified Michael's cards, I am printing every single one of them onto small pieces of poster board to approxamate the Equipment cards that come with the game, they are working really well, I have even made my own backs for them. Anyway I bring this up because Mystified's cards use real artwork of monsters from the Warhammer World and I would not want my friends to get confused if their character hates Skaven and then my "Skaven" pieces don't look like the Skaven on their card. Don't get me wrong my friends are not compleatly lacking in imagination and they love to play the game regardless of what figures I have, I am just trying to make a final end all be all collection of game materials for WHQ kinda like what should have happend if they had continued to make products for WHQ. Thanks for the Advice guys, rest assured we WILL always want to play this great game no matter what.
