The Pedlar's lucky charms

My party has met the Pedlar 3 times so far, so the entire group is loaded down with lucky charms. Is this right? Can Level 2 characters have 3-4 points of Luck each?

To be honest, this is only a problem for me because I'm playing an Imperial Noble and so the lucky charms are amongst the items I have to throw away when I enter Luigi and Salvatore's. And I'm downright jealous of my charm-festooned companions.

Why not just give your lucky charms to one of your fellow adventurers for keepsaking while you visit those locations?

I'm pretty sure that the lucky charms are usable only once and then discarded. I've never had a problem with them. What level is your party that they have so many luck points?? (The base classes are especially unlucky compared to many home-brewed ones, and the Witch Hunter should never be jealous considering he can use Faith to screw with Lady Luck :b ) emoticon

I once thought that the charms were one use items (and they probably should be), but there is an item with the same name that can be purchased by a Wardancer at a Wood Elf Troupe. This item is specificly noted as being usable once per adventure. Because of this, we treat all "Lucky Charms" as reusable.

Re: The Pedlar's lucky charms

Thanks much to everyone for their replies. I appreciate it.

I could just hand the items off to someone else, I suppose. We think that the spirit of the rules probably wouldn't allow that, though the letter does as long as you do it before you reach town. Yeah, I'll proably yield to this temptation.

The lucky charm wording under the Pedlar says "Lucky Charm. 50 gold. A Warrior wearing this may re-roll any single dice roll once per adventure." So we figured they were re-usable. If I were an actual DM, I would probably rule that you can only get the reroll benefit from 1 Lucky Charm, so no matter how many you wear, you'd get 1 reroll, but I think the rules as written would let you roll every adventure.

And we don't actually have that much real Luck; we just have all these crazy Lucky Charms that let us make a total of like 3 rerolls each, plus whatever actual Luck we have. And having that many rerolls has really changed the game, especially since we started travelling in Lustria, where everybody gets to roll for an extra objective room treasure every adventure.

Of course, none of this is anywhere near as powerful right now as the Dwarf's Firestorm Icon, so I suppose I could just stop worrying.

NO WAY do I play that Lucky Charms are re-usable! Players are hard enough to kill! emoticon

Lucky Charms are free Luck Points and a smart player can manage to hoard a couple. But if they were once-per-adventure you'd have BL 5 parties with 30 Lucky Charms. Might as well by the cereal and dole out all the marshmallows while you're at it emoticon

You are free to run the game as you like. However, in this case, non reusable lucky charms are a house rule, and should be clearly stated as such.

Wow, you're 100% correct! And I think I did used to play that way back in the day, now that I think about it. And I never had any balance problems with them either. Now I'm wondering...

How does everyone else fare with Lucky Charms, do they ever get out of control for you? The issue hasn't come up in recent games because my parties have not been fortunate enough to encounter a Pedlar. Plague Towns on the other hand... *sigh*

Re: The Pedlar's lucky charms

In our group several of us have 7-9 lucky charms, and it really hasn't had an effect on the dungeon. It has made the return home a little safer, as we have a house rule that anyone can pay the luck point to reroll the hazard event if it is *bad*, not just the leader.

Most of the time, our group just forgets about their rerolls. If I had a nickel for all the times I've reminded our Wizard that he can reroll the power phase by using his staff or his luck, I'd be able to retire. (Well, that's a slight exageration...)

Re: The Pedlar's lucky charms

In my experience, we've never really had more than 2 or 3 lucky charms each, even with warriors on Battle-Level 8 and 9. We are usually very unlucky emoticon Still, luck is a rare commodity (well, its supposed to be), so even a single roll of Pedlar on the events table suddenly gives the warriors a chance to get as many new luck points as Warriors in the party, which is usually 4 points of permanent luck, which is a hell of a lot! In the Old World, this means Warriors are going to have Luck to spare to make useless rolls such as rerolling a 1 on a treasure roll, or something like that. However, going to places like Lustria and Nehekhara that have extremely dangerous wilderness travel, you're going to need all the luck you can get. Waste it on treasure rerolls at your own peril...

Long story short, the Lucky charms are a treat of a treasure when you first get them in the old World, but they may be just what the Doctor ordered in the more hospitible lands out there. I think it all balances out in the end. Hopefully...

Still, they arn't as powerful as those blasted Golden Lion Blessings from Catacombs of Terror wilderness travel. Use once per adventure to heal all your Wounds. We had about 4 or 5 of them each at one stage. now THATS' rediculous.
