posticon Questions from a second time newbie

I used to play WQ years ago and now that I finally own my own copy of the game I want to play more. I've discovered though that the way we used to play was plagued with many house rules, so I want to clear up what is official.

1. What happens DURING combat when the Wizard rolls a 1 for the power phase? Does that trigger an unexpected event or are unexpected events reserved for non-combat turns?

2. Does a starting level 1 Wizard have to take a spell from each category or can he mix and match them (1 attack and 2 healing spells for example)?

3. When are Objective Room monsters placed? During the Monster phase after the warriors have entered the room, or immediately after the board is placed? (My reason for asking is this: if they are placed after the Warriors have moved, this gives the warriors a chance to cross the Firechasm bridge and take away strategic places from orc and goblin archers.)

Thanks for your help guys!

Hello Csnyder,
I believe a power phase roll of 1 gets an encounter whenever it occurs including in combat. It's a real bummer when you have a bad run of dice.
A starting wizard is meant to pick one at random from each category. I sometimes allow one 'repick' if he gets a really bad lot.
I always place the Objective room monsters after the characters are in place. You could, in theory, stand outside and pick the bad guys off with spells and missile weapons otherwise.
Cheers,
Grogling

Everything grogling says is correct. When I play:

1. If it's a Monster card, then I add more Monsters as normal. If it's an Event card, a use a homemade chart because I hate it when Warriors are searching corpses in the middle of a heated battle. Check out my "Combat Events Table" here - http://wquest.free.fr/index2.htm

2. I never make exceptions from the rule of 1 from each category. There are other wizard-types available at the "Warhammer Quest Museum" that do..

3. I will vary the placement of OR Monsters so that my players don't develop a static strategy like the one grogling mentions. Sometimes I'll fill a room so that the Monsters will seem more imposing, other times I'll wait until the Warriors enter the OR before revealing, making the battle more immediate.
