Trollslayer Skills

Well, the trollslayer has 1 skill when he starts the game according to the back of the booklet at least. Do you generate this skill by rolling 2d6?

The other thought I had was that this one skill was the 'slayer skill' that he starts with. If thats the case, he only ever gains 4 skills over his whole trollslayer career? And the first on level 4? Can that be right? It seems like yet another hindrance to an already underpowered character.

Comments?

Yes... previously I have allowed a player to roll for a skill, but I don't think that this is the intended idea.
As to not having enough skills, I suppose you could give him one if/when he gets a certain roll on the Trollslayer Shrine table that normally grants him a skill called Killing Blow if he has already got it.

Horrible long sentance that. I'm listening to Just a Minute, which might explain it!

In my rules under the skill he has it states that he receives this skill in addition to his starting skill.

I agree: according to the rule-book it's in addition to any other skills, so I suppose you should roll for you first skill.
We've never played the slayer; I wonder why you think he's underpowered? He doesn't seem weaker than e.g. the dwarf or barbarian to me...

By far this character is not underpowered. Weve played it a few times and he is just as equal as any of the characters out there. The runes you get from your temple keep his weapon awesome (especially if he rolls 6's). And being able to keep 2 gold values is awesome.

Hmm, I always thought that the '1' in the Skills column indicated the skill they outlined for you already. (Just like the 4 for Toughness is the same as the 4 for Toughness on the basic card.) Now researching.,..

In the Roleplay book, it's pretty clear to me that the poorly names "Special Trollslayer Skill" is the only one he has up until Battle-Level 4. I don't have the little rulebook in front of me, though, and that IS slightly different as the RP book doesn't mention starting with 3 Stonebreads, so I'm not 100% sure..

Re: Trollslayer Skills

Old thread, but noticed that one line of thought had not been discussed. This issue was brought up on BGG just recently and i addressed it. But looking on here, i noticed that there hadn't been a sufficient discussion on the matter.

I've read the rules and it does not say he gets another starting skill.

In addition to any other skills that they may have, all Trollslayers are able to identify weak spots in any Monster's defence and strike them with almost unerring accuracy.

Whenever a Trollslayer hits with a natural 6, his Strength is modified to the following value when determining damage for that blow. In addition, the Monster may not use its Ignore Blow or Ignore Pain abilities, if it has them, against this blow.

Modified Strength
Trollslayer 7
Giantslayer 8
Dragonslayer 9
Daemonslayer 10

My take is that the Trollslayer does not start with a random skill and that the "1" listed on his Skills column was a misprint in the booklet. The Skill should read 0 (zero) at Level 1 and then he receives a new skill at Level 2.

Reasoning:

#1 Other Warrior comparisons
All the other Warriors start with no skill at Level 1 - even if they have a special skill like Dodge, Beserk, Dance of Death, etc.

#2 If we assume that the "1" in his skills is referring to his starting "Trollslayer Skill" (where he modifies his Strength) then that means he doesn't get another skill until Level 4 (Giantslayer). That itself makes no sense because you'll notice in his Skill entries that there are rules for "Trollslayer" Battle-Level title

#3 Continuing with the Battle-Level Titles in the Skills section as i mentioned above, there are no "Slayer" Battle-Level title rules on his Skills entries (his starting title) - there are only rules for Trollslayer, Giantslayer, Dragonslayer, and Daemonslayer. This supports the fact that he does not receive a random skill at Level 1.

#4 If we assume that the "1" on his Skills entry is a misprint, and should read "0" instead, then his Skill progression is consistent to his other stats (Attacks, Weapon Skill) when compared to the regular Dwarf.

I'd be interested to hear any other reasoning that makes sense.

Littlemonk, I think your are right on with your reasoning in this matter. I often thought that the 1 represented his original Trollslayer skill and that they should have changed it to 2 Skills at BL 2, but your reasoning makes more sense.

No Warrior should ever have to wait until BL 4 to get their first new skill, especially NOT a Trollslayer! emoticon
