posticon Parrying Blade: Last night's discussion

So, I am gamesmastering the Catacombs of Terror last night. Made up four 6th level characters that enter the Dark Necropolis.
Down the stairs into the Spire, one of them steps on the alarm so in the first room a few skeletons are giving our heroes a warm welcome.
The Chaos Warrior gets attacked by a skeleton with a bow. But the CW has a parrying blade(-1 attack for one opponent) and claims he can use it so that the skeleton archer goes from 1 to 0 attacks.
My first reaction was: BS (and that's not short for Ballistic Skill :-) )! But the guy insisted and wanted to interpret the text "This weapon reduces the Attacks of one of the Warrior's opponents by -1" to the letter. After he started bringing Kung Fu films into the argument, stating that those monks can grab an arrow in midflight and catch a bullet with their teeth, I gave in and simply gave the guy what he wanted.

I just wonder what you experts think of this?

P.S. I am 35 years old and the guy playing the Chaos Warrior is 45. Picture us bickering over this, with my wife watching television on the other side of the room :-) I love the way she handles this.

Well, I am normally one that sticks to the rules, but in this case, I believe the purpose of the parrying blade is to parry the Monster's Attacks, not to knock arrows out of the air.

I must agree. I'm a huge fan of kung fu movies, but he's not grabbing the arrows out of the air, he's using a sword. For me, the only correct way to use a parrying sword is against an enemy appointed to the Chaos Warrior and only if he has a hand weapon (it's one thing to knock arrows out of the air, but to hold off a snapping dragon is a whole other ball game).

Yes, I probably agree, but has anyone seen 'Hero'? not just parrying arrows, but sweeping them away?
Though that was more down to the individual than his sword.

Using a bow is not exactly an attack, it's more like... targetting - parrying does not affect it. Just like additional attacks don't permit warriors to shoot more, attack reduction shouldn't affect the number of shots opponents get.

Parrying Blade: Last night's discussion

Thank you guys for the remarks.
My thoughts exactly.

Sometimes I just give in to keep the game flowing. No point in arguing with a 45 year old.

I love the Mordheim Parry rules better than WHQ Parry skills and items. If the Monster hits you, you roll to see if you can beat the roll. For example, if you are hit with a '5', you have to roll a '6'. If you are hit with a '6', you're out of luck.

You cannot parry blows made with double your strength. (Try these rules against a bow, hehehe)
