Event Deck 1.0

About ten years ago, having just purchased a copy of WHQ and just starting to learn to program, I wrote a little app called whqevent. It attempted to simulate the event deck, but included higher level tables as well. I was young, it was in VB, naturally it had many issues.

Well, recently as an exercise of my Java/Swing skills, I decided to revisit the project. I present the result if it to you:

]Event Deck 1.0

--Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

It includes data for the original event deck that came with the game, as well as all the monster and event tables in the roleplay book. (Special thanks to Alex for digitizing the roleplay book, and Bruno for maintaining a fantastic site that made it easy to find.)

All data is written in XML, and anyone handy with such could easily modify or create new datasets to work with the application. I heartily welcome any feedback, bug reports, or new feature ideas.

Enjoy!

-Paul

I remembered it I play it a lot long time ago. I've found it in your old website here

I've downloaded the java runtime here.

By the way it looks and it is great.
Of course I'would like to see more customisation (more monsters with more graphics)

Welcome back

Bruno

PS: The museum have your kender and certainely the thief but I am not sure it was the last version

Bruno -

That's pretty funny. I knew the site for the old "whqevent" app was still festering on my server, but I had totally forgotten that I wrote some professions. I guess I'll have to go back and read what I wrote. I hope they're good. emoticon

As for customization, in fact Event Deck is entirely customizable! Instructions for doing so are in the [sign in to see URL] file included with the app.

Graphics can be added extremely easily. The graphics must be in PNG format, and the names should match the name of the monster but in all lowercase and with hyphens instead of spaces. (eg. "[sign in to see URL]" ) Just drop that file in the "data/graphics/monsters" directory and the app will instantly start to use it.

As for adding more monsters, events, and tables, this only requires a basic working knowledge of XML. You can use the current data in the "data/xml" directory as a guide to get you started. I've even included XML schema (.xsd) files for the various data types. If you have an XML editor that can do schema validation (I use ]jEdit with the XML plugin), it can check your syntax before you try to use it with the app.

I was considering including the data from the two major expansions (Catacombs of Terror and Lair of the Orc Lord) with the basic app, but after doing all ten levels of monster tables from the roleplay book I was a little burnt-out. If anyone wants to create this data, or has good images to use for any of the monsters already in the app, I'd be happy to incorporate that into the current download.

I suppose they're OK, but I probably wouldn't play with them. The thief I think is a bit boring, and I worry that both of them seem a bit underpowered. I seem to recall thinking back then that most of the custom made warriors were over-powered, so maybe I was trying to compensate.

I think the kender has some amusing abilities, but I'm not crazy about the crossing those genres. I'm pretty over Dragon Lance.

I'll PM you my email address. There might be an easy way to export your excel data to an XML format the Event Deck could use.

It's true but sometime we have a pearl. You can comment easily warrior on the database.
But the most important is to have fun
For instance Shadow Warrior is a very well written class.

I'll send you my database export in excel with an explanation. As the database is not finished (eg not verified)it just help you to understand the structure and help to think to the import in xml.
