When Is It Too Late To Use Luck?

Here's 2 scenarios:

The group rolls up a Monster event on the current table and gets a 66. When they roll on the next Battle Level table, they get something particularly nasty and decide that maybe the next level table's too tough for them.

Can they now use luck to reroll the first roll and get something on their own level (assuming they don't get a 66 again...), or has that opportunity passed now that they've tried to roll on the next battle level?

A similar second scenario - A player rolls for a monster to hit, and when it does, rolls for damage. When the result of the hit is determined, they then decide to use luck to re-roll the Monster's to-hit hoping it will miss after all.

What are the house-rules policies for Luck for you guys out there?

Scenario 1:
I don't play random quests, but I would say characters/players can't use luck to determine which monsters they will face.

Scenario 2:
In my games players use Luck not to get a re-roll but to turn a hit into a miss. They can use it after they know what damage they would get. They have a difficult enough time as it is emoticon

I only allow luck to re-roll the last dice rolled.

So in your first example, I will allow a re-roll on the second monstertable but not on the first one. As for your second, I won't allow a to hit re-roll, but would re-roll the damage roll.

If you go further back than the last dice rolled, next thing you know, the players will be asking you to re-roll the Power phase when they're in combat so they can cast better spells.

Sudden Real -

That's sound advice. When a GM is involved, I find Luck to be more of a frustration than anything else. sometimes things HAVE to happen to advance the plot, so I find I often regulate what players can do with their luck points. I hate to see players waste 4 points of luck trying to avoid the terrible beast or trap that I've placed there on purpose.

I've also looked to create a system that would allow the GM to decide when to use luck for the players, but I've never found one that leaves everyone feeling good about the process.
