Berserk!
Hey
Just a quick question- do Barbarians (and Trollslayers if applicable) HAVE to roll Berserk, or can they choose not to? I have always run it so that they do but I think the wording suggests it's their choice.

Re: Berserk!
I've always played it as there choice. It takes a concious choice most of the time to work yourself into a beserk rage in my opinion. I dont see why you wouldnt though unless your buddy is next to you on 1 wound.

Re: Berserk!
I never played it as a choice. I mean, I can't really see a barbarian in a combat think "hmm, things are going pretty good, with all this gold I'm making, I'll be able to buy that new shiny armor... well, to speed things up, I'll go in Berserker rage for a while, that should be fun..."
I've always seen combat having the same effect on a barbarian as something red on a bull. Charge and think about the consequences later. After all, you get a +1 on your berserk roll for each enemie you killed during that combat to illustrate this.
Berserker isn't a choice, it's a way of life.

Re: Berserk!
Yes, I totally agree with the opininon of Sudden Real. Going berserk is like an characteristic of the barbarian, providing sometimes advantage, sometimes disadvantage for the players. There is no choice, the barbarian doesnt think if or not, he just goes berserk and we have to live with the result .

Re: Berserk!
Beserking is a mental instability (or gift depending on how you look at it). A schizophrenic has no choice as to when other characters talk; a psychotic patient cannot cannot predict when he/she will see something unreal; so a beserker cannot choose when to beserk.
Thus I think it is a 'must roll' issue. Besides, the dwarf cannot choose when to roll his two damage dice. (Unless he changes weapons I suppose!)

Re: Berserk!
So I'm okay in forcing people to roll berserk whether they like it or not? Good-o! That's all I wanted to hear.

Re: Berserk!
Tagging onto the end of this, when he gets a '1', does he only damage nearby warriors or do all things standing next to him (including monsters) take one damage?
I like to think it is a wild frenzy that hits all rather than one aimed at friends.

Re: Berserk!
Well again officially it's only Warriors but frankly that's nonsense. I think most people just do a point of damage to all in the radius and move on.

Re: Berserk!
Historicly though beserkers spent time before batle working them into a beserk rage rather than it being a mental instability, but really in game terms it wouldnt bother me either way if you do whatever you feel like.
