WHQ 2nd Ed - The Power Phase

Discussion in the other two threads has powered (lol, stupid pun...) down, so let's move on to phase 1 (in the Basic Game). The only suggestion I have (then again, I'm nowhere near my rule book) is to divide the power and unexpected event rolls and/or to disallow unexpected events during combat.

Perhaps some change to the system to stop the warriors investigating strange runes as beastmen tear into their sides emoticon

We may also want to clafify the rule where a wizard gains his BL worth of power whenever he doesn't roll a 1. Should this only apply to the advanced game or what?

Re: WHQ 2nd Ed - The Power Phase

I have made the house rule that when an unexpected even during combat happens, monsters join the combat (reinforcements) and events are resolved the turn after the combat. That way there is less confusion on found treasure, the amount of event and even RP credibility.

As for the Wizard adding his battle-lvl, I think it's best to apply this only to the advanced game, same like rolling for fear. As inexperienced warriors are fearless by their own naivity, an inexperienced wizard isn't so atuned to the winds of magic as a wizard who has been to some dungeons.

Well, just my opinions, but I'm willing to share them with you...

To get around the "event during combat" problem, I know that Art and myself have made alternate event tables for situations like these. They are available under the "rules" section in the Museum, and they are aptly called "Combat Events Table"s.

I like the idea of combat events, but I think they're too complicated for the basic game. In the case of the basic game, I'd go with either no events just to simplify things or the way things are. In the Advanced, I'd definitely go with the Combat Events.

Should they be on a different roll, seperate from the Power Roll but in the same phase?

Besides the fact that no one answered my previous question, we all seem to have forgot that Monster placement is covered (in the rulebook anyways) in the power phase! Any corrections besides the detail about prone warriors?

Most, I think, have a seperate Events and Power Dice. as for Monster placement, as far as I can see it's only unexpected monsters that get placed in the power phase.

I am never that sure about spell bearing monsters. Some, like the vampires, or dragons, seem the type to go into combat rather than ponce about firing off spells, but the rules are a little inflexible- they are treated as missile troops.

Then again, this is Advanced stuff anyway. Personally, I think most of the Monster placement rules are pretty good.
