I, too, agree with grogling... The rate at which characters level does work well. To mee the 10% Gold is cool as well. Simple to use and simple to translate to new monster tables. Since the 10% come from the already balanced gols value, it should work out as a balanced gold system as well, without a bunch of non-WHQ changes.

It would be a balanced gold system, but I warn you that it gives the players another boost in their favour. Don't be surprised if the monsters get a friendly bonus when we get to them to counteract.

Re: Experience Points

In my games, I use make both experience and gold required for warriors to raise levels. Firstly, they have to have the standard amount of experience, and then they also have to pay for training, at 1000g per battle level.

We use the gold value of monsters as experience, and 1/4 of their gold value as the amount of gold obtained from them, whether it is considered bounty or useful parts like bat wings etc.

I seriously toned down the chances of obtaining valuable treasure in my games, so obtaining gold is more of a struggle for my warriors.

Hope this helps

Yeah, that's why we were discussing the treasure tables or something. What system are we going with?

Re: Experience Points

I saw it suggested in one of the house rules faqs that most monsters would have at least something on them, whether it is treasure, or simply a body part that might be useful in potions or to make clothing or armour from, etc. that could be taken as having a gold value, hence the bat [sign in to see URL], in hindsight my prose was probably a little confusing there.

It's a simplistic explanation for gold value, but avoids excessive table rolling for mundane items of treasure or weapons and so forth.

It was always a goal of mine to make 'gold' actually valuable in WHQ, so I'm strongly in favour of an experience point system that reduces the amount of gold obtained from adventuring.

I also think some kind of gold cost should be retained for training if it is decided that experience points should be adopted. Otherwise, what are the warriors going to do with all that money? Buy a Keep? Unless you have an ever increasing cash drain on the warriors, they can get quite rich quite fast.

I remember playing so that the cost of training was the same as normal, with at LEAST 10% being in gold. That meant that you could pay more to advance your training before you had the exp, but it meant you were continually scrabbling around for cash.
This was the '10% gold, 100% exp' system.

Works for me, especially if the warriors actually have a decent selection of things to actually spend their gold on.

After changing to using exp in my games, the warriors found that they had little use for gold besides that 1000g/level which they spent on their training.

Okay, so it seems like we're going with a majority EXP and minority gold, more than likely 10% and... something. 90 or 100%? Sorry, I just need to be clear. I need to know the number for training, too.
