Re: Quest Chronicle

Turn 19
Draton attacks the Minotaur with his pickaxe, but again his fear gets the better of him and he narrowly misses. Gizelle's bow also misses. Again. She considers just using it to hit the Minotaur on the head. Thyrael shoots and hits, but his arrow lodges in a piece of armour strapped to the Minotaur and appears to do no damage. He consoles himself with a quick snack. Scrag repeats his assault, making a minor wound. The Minotaur doesn't look ready to fall, yet it is increasingly panicked, missing opportunities to hit the Pit Fighter.

Re: Quest Chronicle

Turn 20
The warriors know that they are near to victory. All that is needed is a few good strikes...
...which is exactly what Draton delivers, striking a mighty blow that rends the beast's hide and rearranges a few internal organs. Surely it cannot live much longer? Gizelle takes a deep breath. She lifts her suspiciously twisted short bow, arrow notched. She sights, pulls back, and releases the arrow, which arcs gracefully towards the Minotaur, scoring an almost perfect hit.
Then it hits a protruding horn and bounces off, causing a slight scratch.
The witch's reaction is not ladylike.
Thyrael does his best with his own short bow, but again has no success. Wondering whether he should save his arrows, he helps himself to a sandwich instead.
Scrag, egged on by his companions, makes another flurry of blows, each one hurting the Minotaur until it finally gives up the ghost and collapses to the ground, dead.
There is a moment of silence as the warriors recover their breath. Draton takes out the parchment he found in the small prison cell and passes it around to see if anyone can decipher it.

Draton studies the text. The letters are nothing like the dwarf runes that he knows, nor are they imperial characters. Instead, he remembers seeing similar lettering in a book he consulted in the Library in Altdorf when researching Kedrin Ikthinstal. It was a code used by some group... he wracks his memory. Was it the Imperial Guild of Surveyors? One of the Colleges of Magic? Or something to do with elves?
At the bottom he sees a sigil he does recognise, with a shock. It is the personal mark of the Amethyst Mage Derros Imalkin- the very man whose researches led the warriors here. Scrag glimpses at the parchment but grunts, unable to see anything in it. Thyrael peers over Draton's shoulder and takes a look at the parchment. He concurs with the Goldhunter’s reading, pointing out the faded crest of the Amethyst College of Magic. Clearly the mage must have been captured by these beastmen and held here. But what became of him? Was this part of his search for the horde of Kedrin Ikthinstal?

Gizelle takes the parchment delicately. Reaching out with her magical senses she receives vivid images. It is not magical, but has been in the presence of magic users… Gizelle senses a battle- the mage that wrote the message on the parchment- leaving a message for one of his apprentices- a ruined tower- a horde of beastmen- the mage abducted by them, the surviving apprentice following- the apprentice captured, imprisoned here…
Clearly this parchment contains some instructions from the master wizard, who must be Imalkin, to his apprentice, written when the wizard knew he was about to be captured. The apprentice must have tried to rescue his master and been taken. The question is, how long ago was all this? And can the warriors have any chance against a foe that could overpower a master mage of the Amethyst order in his tower?

Re: Quest Chronicle

Turn 21
Suddenly Gizelle feels another mind on the edge of her magical awareness. Another mind attuned to the Winds of Magic... and one she cannot identify. If a human, he or she has been twisted out of all resemblance to one. The thought patterns are strange to her...
The trace withdraws, and Gizelle’s mind returns to itself.
Draton finds another bottle in the belt of one of the Minotaur corpses. Then he moves off down the corridor, and stands ready to open the north door.
Gizelle seems to sense that something is not right. She asks the others to wait and goes back to the cell, pausing on the threshold because the distant lantern does not cast light far enough for her to see any further. Perhaps Thyrael could be of assistance?
He moves up to the Witch and, with his more powerful eyesight, steps into the room. She whispers to him, and he follows her directions, tugging away a stone in the wall. He reaches into the alcove beyond and pulls out a parcel of some description... a small object wrapped in more parchment. Thyrael’s vision and Gizelle’s… Vision… has served them well.
Scrag, unsure about which group to follow, maintains his stance in case of trouble.

Re: Quest Chronicle

Turn 22
Draton sees that the rest of the party has apparently deserted him, and settles down to wait. Gizelle places the Stone of Power inside her robe and moves back to the leader.

Re: Quest Chronicle

Turn 23
With deadly swiftness, the floor tile below Gizelle simply drops away, and she plummets into the pit. Hitting the ground with a painful wretch of her body, she suffers some minor damage, but will now require some help to escape! Thyrael clings as closely to the wall as possible hoping that no more of the floor will collapse and has a quick snack to steady his nerves. Gizelle decides to use her time profitably and incants a spell that heals all the warriors, restoring vitality lost in the last battle.
Scrag sees what has happened and sprints down the corridor, uncoiling his rope, and using it to haul up the witch with the willing help of the Goldhunter.
They take a moment to recover, and are ready to move on.

Re: Quest Chronicle

Turn 24
The witch recovered, Draton moves back to the north and prepares to open the door. He warns the halfling not to let his curiosity take control and open the other door. The dwarf does not relish a potential battle on two fronts.
Thyrael mumbles “but I like to open doors…”
He bounces around the spike trap and peeps through the door. His skills as a scout are either unnecessary or inadequate, as he detects nothing much.
The Pit Fighter moves up, and the Goldhunter pushes the door open.
The room is lit, with candles set in sconces around the walls. There are a few barrels along the far walls and some piles of junk.

Re: Quest Chronicle

Turn 25
Draton moves forward into the room. He is ready to for an ambush! Gizelle moves in after him, murmuring like a mantra “Just don't let it be Minotaurs!”
Draton overhears her. “I prefer to fight Minotaurs! Let's laugh, that way the monsters will see our courage!”
He proceeds to burst out into laughter. Thyrael slinks into the room behind him, and moves into the shadows in the corner. Scrag moves in too, possibly wondering at the dwarf's strange courage.
Out of the darkness lurches a figure with a horrible, guttural cry. The warriors all leap out of their skins, but before they can attack, the figure speaks.
“Wait, no, don't kill me...” It is a man, a human, dressed in a dirty red robe with purple patterns all over it. His face is partially hidden. He gives another cough and shuffles forward. His legs seem to be inhibited in some way. “You must help me!”
As he says it, a spear flies out of the darkness, and with a clatter and crash, beastmen leap from the ruins and piles of junk, chanting a warcry, brandishing their weapons...
Each warrior takes a hit from a spear, though Scrag comes off best. His pit-fighting instincts kick in and he takes the missile on his armoured chest, reducing its impact. Striking out with his fist-spike he hits one of the attackers a resounding blow.

Re: Quest Chronicle

Turn 26
For all Draton's laughter, he doesn't manage to hit the assailants. Out of the corner of his eye he sees the slumped human, who has collapsed and been trampled by the advancing Gors. Was he a decoy? Perhaps even a mutant?
Gizelle strikes the Gor closest to her and then incants a spell, healing the warriors. Trying to clear a path to the doorway Thyrael launches an arrow at the beastman closest to Scrag but his arrow causes no damage to the Gor. Scrag himself does better, killing one and wounding another.
The beastmen counterattack, three striking Draton who twists out of the way of two blows but is hit by the third. Scrag and Gizelle suffer trifling hits. Behind the monsters, one Gor remains, brandishing its arms and roaring.

Re: Quest Chronicle

Turn 27
Draton slays the beast attacking Gizelle with a deft swipe of his pick. Gizelle misses her mark. Thyrael tries to clear the beastman away from Gizelle but misses badly. He is so upset he fails to find any food at all. Draton groans at this- it is a very bad omen to see the halfling acting so out of character. Scrag does his best, hitting a beastman twice, but does little damage.
Seeing Draton's kill, the beastman at the back of the pack charges to fill the gap, trampling the unfortunate body of the human as it does so. The embattled warriors hear a groan of pain. It sounds like the human is still alive, for now.
The Gors do terrible damage to Scrag, with two hits causing horrible wounds. Draton takes an attack on his shield, while Gizelle staggers from another blow. This battle is not going well.

Re: Quest Chronicle

Turn 28
Draton's attack has little effect on the towering beastman. Can his resolve be faltering? Gizelle makes a solid hit on her attacker, then focuses her mind and brings healing upon the group. She passes a healing pack of provisions to Scrag. Thyrael's arrow falls short. Scrag takes a gulp of his potion, and then goes into action. His Pit Spike smashes down a goatheaded beastman and he leaps forward, striking again sideways to take out one of the wounded ones.
A Gor charges at Gizelle, striking her with a sword, but with little strength behind it, so the witch catches the blow in her heavy robes and takes no damage. Draton's shield and armour save him again, as he is struck with a heavy blow. Scrag's attacker has no luck, though.
