Fire ball

What is the point in the fireball spell? It costs 5 magic and does such awful damage, if at all. I've oft thought it shouldn't be modified...

Re: Fire ball

Depends. In the original pack of cards it does 1D6+2 damage rather than 1D6+BL, which is a little bit better. As it is it's handy for roasting goblins and vermin.

Re: Fire ball

I think the cost is relative to the fact that it covers an area of damage. It CAN potentially kill up to four orcs in one casting, assuming some awfully good rolling (four 6's at BL 1, but more easily at higher BLs).

It DOES indeed seem expensive when compared to the Freeze spell (cost 5 also) -- at least at BL 1. But, Freeze also has its limitations. If one rolls a 1 for the Freeze effect it only hurts one monster for 1 wound (no mods) -- on a 2 only two monster for 2 wounds each (no mods). But, the Freeze spell is a little more potentially harming to the monsters (at least at BL 1).

However, if we compare the fact that the fireball spell increases in strength without increasing in cost (does 1D6+BL wounds, then modified for T and arm -- at BL 10 that is 1D6+10 on four potential targets for only 5 cost), then it would in many situations be even more useful than Freeze -- which does NOT increase in strength with BLs.

Also, at higher levels you can toast the more numerous weaker creatures with fireballs while keeping out of the thick of the physical fighting (hopefully).

Wizard's magic is just awfully unpredictable. Some are wanting even more dire results for the use of such magic -- as in insanity points and consequences.

I hope my rambling has given some hope to a wizard that has trouble controlling the unpredictable potentency of fireballs.
