Re: Simple Poll on the Death-blow - Which Way Do You Play It? (related to slain monster's wounds)

Yeah i tend to divide it up depending upon the monster if its an orc level 1 then i dont bother as its too lower gold to count. But i usually give 300 for 10 wounds on a minataur and 140 for the other 5.

If its an easy split then its 50/50.

I generally divide the entire amount of monster kills between all the Warriors, unless for some reason the party is physically separated from one another and one or more Warriors do not contribute to the combat in any way. Then they get left out. However, when playing with characters like the Ogre, Friendly Giant and Martial Artist, who all have special gold-sharing rules, I tend to revert back towards the original gold rules.

I use the Ogre rules pretty much as written. If the Ogre gets the kill by himself, then he rolls to see how much he drops as normal. If it is Group Gold, everyone gets their fair share and then the Ogre rolls to see if he drops his portion (usually he does one roll for the lot but if it was a huge combat he might roll for the portion of each of the more expensive guys).

I've actually tried using the xp method, so therefore gold totals differ from the listed totals in the tables. So, to make it easier on myself, I just keep track of all the monsters killed, then divide the gold/xp evenly at the end of the adventure/deep

Just renewed my interest in this great game(found players to play!). I have all the Warrior packs and on page 21 of the Wardancer booklet, it mentions "uninjured Monster" and "death-blow as usual". This goes along with the "single blow" wording of the death-blow entry on page 25 of the rulebook. I have played it wrong(getting a death-blow every time a Monster is killed)since the start. Now that I am the Gamemaster, I will make sure the Warriors do it right! emoticon

Re: Simple Poll on the Death-blow - Which Way Do You Play It? (related to slain monster's wounds)

I play that Deathblows only occur when the slain monster had been on full wounds, and here's why:

In order to be believable, a Deathblow has to come from an edged weapon like a sword or an axe, something which can lop the head right off one monster and carry on into the one standing next to it (warhammers being the one exception; they can just crush everything in their path). Furthermore, in order to be realistic said edged weapon would have to have been swung horizontally. So for instance, a direct overhead strike with an axe, while certainly capable of splitting a Goblin from crown to groin, would then hit the floor before it ever hit the next Goblin.

Since warriors in WHQ don't have to declare what kind of strike they are making before attacking, the Deathblow rule allows for there to be some amount of dynamism to the different attacks: if a warrior takes a monster down from full wounds in a single strike, it's because (s)he used a powerful horizontal swing that clove the foe in two and carried on into the next baddie. If a warrior kills a monster who was already wounded, then no Deathblow occurs because (s)he was actually just using a different type of attack, like a thrust or an overhead strike.

I play the deathblow rule as Nachie has stated (i.e. only occurs on a monster that has not been previously wounded & is only made by edged weapons).

Although considering what people have said about Warhammers I might make that an exception.

I play it so that a wounded enemy can still give a death blow to the warrior that hit it, wardancer book clarifies this is the rule.

however, just a note on those who have said they do it the other way (your game your rules, not a criticism here)

it means that level 10 warriors are suddenly less skilled than level 1 warriors because they will rarely get deathblows?

I don't use realism as an excuse either. this is a game in which you open a door and enter a deserted room, then suddenly (monster card) notice a dragon sitting on a massive pile of gold in the corner!

partly because I also larp and find that "realism" is a dangerous door to open on a rules conversation emoticon

as for splitting gold we go by the rules whoever gets the killing blow gets the gold. occasionally there are kill-steals, but we tend to share gold if needed to level up anyway.
plus if the kill-steals carry on that person becomes the one who cannot afford to level up by the end of the adventure if someone has to go without.

play fair and others play fair, do not play fair and that also tends to reciprocate!

most of my posts may run into essay length. I find that for a lot of queries/feedback context is important and that is why this happens more often than not.

have a great day :D

2.5 to 1 in favor of sharing a deathblow.

Wow, we are certainly in the minority here.

Oh well, I find we here in the Northern Rockies now and in the Baltimore vicinity in the mid-to-late '90s to be in the distinct minority a great deal of the time here on this WHQ forum.
