posticon revised Warrior - the Soldier

Hi everyone.

I revised the Empire Solider Warrior originally written by Don Farquhar.
Here's the current version, take a look and see what you think:

Hello, Thecustodian.

You beat me to the punch!

I have reviewed this revision -- having had earlier access to it.

One thing I like about this revision is the random nature of the starting equipment as I think this well represents the diverse nature of equipment with which soldiers/mercenaries might start their adventuring career.

I am eager to see what others think, since I am afraid I have been too close to this custom Warrior for too long. Fresh perspective would be refreshing! emoticon

I am moving this topic to the Warriors forum as I think that will help give it more exposure to those who want to try new Warriors in their games.

Re: revised Warrior - the Soldier

I think he needs some extra flavour. Instead of just some run-of-the-mill joe, why not give him a some status? You mention the mark of the Elector Count, so why not make the soldier more 'elite' - perhaps he served as a bodyguard for the Elector Count or perhaps he is from the Count's special forces? In other words, instead of a 'soldier' (boring) make him a 'Soldier of Fortune' or a 'Deserter' (exciting/interesting!)?

Even the title 'Soldier' could be something more like 'Legionnaire' or even 'Dog of War'. Calling him 'Empire Soldier' would be better as well.

This would be flavour only and doesn't actually change anything important. But it would flesh out the Warrior a bit.

In addition, you could indicate some more important reasons for him adventuring instead of just trying something more "profitable" - unless of course you intend to flavour this guy up, which fleshes out the Warrior instead.

How about a profession table with the appropriate starting skill. You could also give some flavour text about each profession:

1. Soldier of Fortune (Charge – in the first round of combat, the Soldier may make an extra Attack.)
2. Deserter (Endure – once per adventure, the Soldier can ignore the effects of an attack that would otherwise reduce him to 0 Wounds)
3. Bodyguard (Killing Blow – on a natural roll of 6 to hit, the Soldier may roll an extra Damage Dice)
4. Arms Instructor (Parry 6+ - roll 1D6 against incoming melee attacks, turning them aside on a roll of 6.
5. Pistolier or Bowman (Sureshot - This skill allows the Soldier to re-roll any one missile attack that misses each turn.
6. Officer (Rouse the Troops – If another Warrior is on 0 Wounds and the Soldier is still conscious, they can roll a Toughness test. On a 7+, place the Warrior on 1 Wound. The Soldier can do this once per turn, after the Monster’s Phase but before Fatal Damage is calculated.)

And, of course, you would start him with the appropriate weapon based on his 'profession'.

I realize that you are going for a 'random' Warrior, but my first thought it how simple and boring he is. With such a huge range of weapons and skills, why not allow someone to narrow in on what type of soldier they want to play? And if they want random, you have the profession table they can roll on in that case?

Some other notes:

Initiative 5 to start? My recommendation is a simple 3. Soldiers are not known for their initiative. Far from it...

Ballistic Skill is 4+ throughout?

Special Rules: former career - "many excellent reasons..." Why not just list the reasons? Saying that there are many reasons just makes it seem like you're trying to justify something that you shouldn't have to justify. Don't give the person reading this Warrior a reason to think that this guy shouldn't be adventuring.

Recent History:
"Roll 1D6 to discover why he became an adventurer..."

This is the best part. Reminds me of 'Dark Secrets' mixed with why you are adventuring. But i would put this in the Advanced Rules section and not for use in the Basic Game.

But the text doesn't nearly explain why he is adventuring. Why does having an 'Injury' make him start adventuring? What does #5 have to to the reason he left the army? How about he left because he make a bad choice (maybe) had stolen some things while in the army? He left so he wouldn't get caught. On #6, perhaps he didn't get into trouble (maybe he's not a bad guy ), but had a greedy reputation? #1 don't say "perhaps" - just tell us why. #3 don't say "perhaps" and don't give examples on that one. The rest of the text is perfect.

Give explanations:

Injury - the soldier was seriously injured in battle and he has since been unable to perform his military duties to a satisfactory level. Tagged as a liability by his superiors, the soldier was discharged from service.

Treasure and Equipment
Don't mention "Locations he can enter" here - that's the Advanced Rules.

I think the Drill Yard training should be 1D6 option on each table. Rolling a 12 is nearly impossible.

I think each time he deducts -1 Wound in the booklet it should be -1D3 Wounds.

Blessed are the curious for they shall have adventures.

Good to see you visiting the board, Don.

I have often thought of the use of henchmen in Warhammer Quest games. The Soldier, in his original form seemed much like a glorified henchman. I DO like the original though.

I think the main reason some of the gaming community thought this character needed revising was that he started out with much more physical protection than most others, of both official and custom Warriors.

Its good to be back, didnt have regular access to an internet server that let me on the site, but new work means i can get on more regular now.

Yeah i get why people wanted to change the character, i do still like the original version as it was my first attempt at creating a character.

Ive got another one in the pipe line, just need the time to flesh him out a bit and make him a bit more special than the Empire Soldier.

Thanks for the constructive critisim, i take it all on board and hopefully improve the next character i create.
