The Wizard's Staff, Have I Been Playing it Wrong?

Warrior Monk made some comments, in the topic about the Trollslayer that got me to thinking. Man, have I been wrong all these years? It seems obvious now...

I have always thought the description of the Wizard's Staff was just colorful wording -- you know, like saying "she sauntered over to the davenport" instead of saying "she walked over to the couch". I quote below and then comment.

quote:

The Wizard may use the staff in hand-to-hand combat at -1 on his to hit roll. It
causes (1D6+the Wizard's Strength) Wounds on the target. It can also be wielded defensively, giving the Wizard +1 Toughness while he carries it.

I always thought it meant that he would just choose to use it as his weapon and gain the +1 T AND suffer the -1 to hit while wielding it as his weapon in hand-to-hand combat.
BUT, after all Warrior Monk has said about holding it in one hand while wielding a sword in the other, it now makes much more sense to me. The text from the RolePlay Book seems fairly clear now to me. The Wizard can wield the Wizard's Staff either offensively, in which case he suffers -1 to hit, OR wield it defensively, while using another one-handed weapon for his Attacks. To represent this, he gets +1 Toughness to show that less damage is getting through.

So, does he have to be wielding another weapon to use the staff defensively? OR, does the "also" mean he can do both in the same turn? It seems to me he would prefer to use a better weapon to make his Attacks while holding the staff for defense in the other hand (his off hand).

I've always played the staff as a regular weapon, there's no wording about election or it being specifically able to be used in conjuction with another weapon.

I would say that since there is no instance of "or", "conversely", "otherwise" or any other sort of definite description which gives it a 'mode' that the Wizard's Staff is a normal weapon (written mainly for fluff) with specific FAQs stating that it must be actively wielded to attack and gain +1 toughness, but only needs to be on the warrior's person to gain the reroll to the power dice?

What it comes down to is this:

Is the Wizard's Staff just a special shield (which is pretty must exactly what it is being described as above) that a wizard can use which he can attack with (with a -1 to hit) and reroll the power dice once per dungeon?

Or

Is it a weapon with specific added bonuses for just having it on your person when not wielding it actively?

Sorry OldWarrior, the on-line FAQs, both v2.1 & v3.0, say you have to be using it as a weapon to get the +1T bonus.
As I said on the other thread, the originators of the FAQ did not provide the actual sources of their rulings, only extremely general labels like GWUK or GWUS and so forth so they do not hold a lot of water with me and how I was trained.

Granted, as I posted over on the Slayer thread, the WHQ developers had a different stated opinion on the matter, but they never put it to paper while they were in charge and when WHQ was in production, so their statements do not officially count.
Sorry.

I guess it would be the only house rule I might endorse.

Well, this is funny. I was about to change my understanding of the rules and you stopped me! lol

EDIT: So, you are telling me then that I HAVE been playing this correctly all these years. That is a relief! emoticon

Just to be clear, I have always played that the Wizard had to be wielding the Wizard's Staff as his weapon of choice (the Warriors choose each turn) in order to get the +1 Toughness.

According to the on-line FAQs, you have been playing it right.

According to my understanding of the English language and according to the game developers, you were changing to the correct way.

Oh well.

Well, I like to get things right -- as in follow the rules (mostly anyway).

I think in a game like this it is good to be consistent, even if not entirely right. emoticon

Sometimes my brain is too wishy-washy.

I do love to experiment though.

We have to stop this "right" and "wrong" way stuff. The rules are open to interpretation. The game is no longer supported.

I have discussed rules recently with both Andy Jones and Gav Thorpe and it's not a priority that they clarify them - and even Gav mentioned that it's been a looong time since he's played WHQ. And Andy asked me not to post his reply anywhere, so i'm not at liberty to share our discussion.

The point is, where there is ambiguity and interpretation in the ruels, there is no "wrong" or "right" way to play. Do what's best for you and your gaming group. Have fun. Enjoy. When you start arguing about who is right and wrong, when you start using justification like "realism" or "that's how they did it in books/movies", then you you're defeating the purpose of what Warhammer Quest is all about.

The are some clear and concise core rules that should be adhered to. Everything after that is just preference. I'll bet the no two gaming groups play exactly the same. And that's exactly how it should be.

Everything else is just ego.
