Appropriate toy soldier or an appropriate pawn?

Both here and back at the old BTGM WhQ site, there were many that argued about what was and what was not good or even appropriate toy soldiers to use for the Warriors or even the Monsters in WhQ.

I, personally, am one of those who are considered to be, by some here and there at very least, one of the "Mindless Faithful" because I feel that unless GW did/does not make a toy soldier that could be the W/M, you do not go afield to find your toy soldiers for this game we all love.

Now, no one should start cheering thinking I have joined the "Apostates"; I have not.
I have a thought here though and it is present for two reasons.

1) Some Warriors are just near impossible or actually impossible to find a female GW-made/produced toy soldier for our "Sisters" to use who play WhQ.
2) Some Monsters are just too "unwieldy" to play with on/in a non-WFB setting.
Moreover, the "base size" and "large Monster" arguments have become a serious issue with Littlemonk and I among the leaders of the diametrically opposite factions of that engagement.

A solution to these issues came to my awareness after FFG announced the fact they could not get GW to agree to a renewal of their use of the GW IPs or even a reasonable new agreement.
Talked to a couple friends of mine - these negotiations ended very un/impolitely from what I was informed - par for the course for GW in the 21st Century.
Any way, a shoppe near me decided to let their stock of FFG's manufactured GW stuff go for bargain basement prices just to purge it.
By time I thought to go, all there was left was five copies of Black Fire Pass from WF-RPG 3rd Ed. left.
Since I like Dwarves and the shoppe was only asking $[sign in to see URL] for this $[sign in to see URL] WF-RPG 3rd Ed. expansion, I picked up a copy.
Opened it and was floored by the quality of the pawns within.

Talked to some other friends and they said all of the WF-RPG 3rd Ed. pawns made by FFG were of that quality.
A few of them said I should also look into Paizo Monster pawns so I did.
Again, I was impressed, but not so much as I was by the FFG ones specifically designed for the world in which we play.
So I spent the last few weeks carefully collecting the WF-RPG 3rd Ed. core game and all but four of the expansions (still on the hunt for those - gosh darn, they are the expensive ones!).
Furthermore, I picked up the first of the Bestiary pawn sets from Paizo as well.

Word of warning here: unless you get into the pawns seriously and/or you already play Pathfinder or a similar RPG, do not go in the Paizo direction.
In this pawn set there are 256 different pawns and a goodly minority of them come with multiples of them - so the set totals out at about 350 pawns.
I found I had a possible use for only 24 of them and nearly half were dragons I might use a couple times a year - maybe.
So unless you also buy the pdf of the set and use the other "useless" pawns as bases to put the printed out needed pawns onto, this is a lot of money spent for very little return.
This set is priced at MSRP of $[sign in to see URL] and the pdf is another $[sign in to see URL].
I got my physical set at half MSRP, but there was no way to get an inexpensive copy of the pdf.
It gives me variety for a selection of monsters, but it was a pricey way to go - at least for my circumstances.
The small and medium bases that came with this box have been very useful though; put "large monsters" on the medium bases while putting anything else on the small ones; have absolutely no use for the huge bases so they sit in the pawn box.

As far as WF-RPG 3rd Ed. though, I have been able to use Amazon, eBay and a game shoppe in the MidWest that I frequent virtually to get everything so far at prices less than half MSRP, sometimes a lot less - just not as good as I got Black Fire Pass locally {by the way, I went back and got the other four copies - sweet Dragon Ogre pawn within - thought $[sign in to see URL] for each of those pawns was a good deal with not even counting what else I was able to use from the sets}.

Anyway, I thought I would tell you folks about this.
I am also going to try to show as well.
Here goes just a few:

With the Monsters, the Paizo one is on top with the FFG one on the bottom.
The ladies are, of course, the latter three images.

Sorry for how small the images came out.
Not sure what I did wrong when I uploaded to Photobucket.
I will try again in the near future.

So, what are your opinions concerning pawns in WhQ?

for the sheer quantity of pawns that is not bad value actually!
I couldn't use pawns like that in my game, I have heavy handed players that have destroyed my WHQ original wardancer model already emoticon and that player was female!

don't even want to talk about one of the male players in my group and his tendency to destroy all things...

I tend to use any and all models to represent things, especially monsters, as you get to higher level my orcs become ogres to enable my minotaur/ogre/rat ogre models to become griffons, dragons and greater daemons!

most of my posts may run into essay length. I find that for a lot of queries/feedback context is important and that is why this happens more often than not.

have a great day :D
