Warrior Priest

After reading the scathing review on Boardgamegeek, I am trying to
"fix" the Warrior Priest. Any ideas? Here are mine.

#1 Roll on Prayer table for the first Quest.

#2 Roll D6+ Willpower to succeed on Blessing.

#3 Attempt Blessings each turn = Willpower

#4 # of Blessings each turn is the number
after the "/" in the last column of
   Warrior Priest profile.

This basically means at BL 1 you attempt
to cast Blessings 3 times until you cast
1 or fail 3 times. An easy way to do this
would be to assign a different colored die
to each attempt. Then put the Blessings in
the order of urgency (I made Blessing cards),
 1st, 2nd and 3rd. Roll all 3 dice
at once and the first roll to succeed means you
cast that Blessing this turn.

Looking for ideas to make the Jade Ring not suck emoticon

Re: Warrior Priest

I do like the Warrior priest as a character, but I have noticed he has a tendency to lag behind, and his ring of jade is just as good in the first adventure as it is when he's level 10.

In the current campaign I am playing I am using rules for serious injuries that need to be healed at a Doctor's in a settlement, and I am experimenting with rules that for each day he spends assisting the priestess' of Shallya there is a chance he gains an ability next adventure to heal D6 + BL wounds (on either himself, or another warrior depending on the specific initial roll). My hope behind this is it will give him a bit more robust healing (which he would get gold for) without the risk of rolling a bloody double one just when you absolutely don't need it!

Another option might be to add the warrior's BL to the dice result when generating the ring of jade healing (for example, a double 4 on a BL 6 character would heal 4+4+6 wounds in total, with the usual restrictions) or maybe a reroll ability at a certain BL (maybe reroll one dice at level 5, up to 2 dice at level 9?) to make his healing a bit more reliable as he progresses.

Also for what he pays for a roll on the table in the Temple of Sigmar and the results he can get are simply not worth it. I think that they need a re write (which I may experiment with at some point in the future).

I was also thinking of allow a mechanism to minister to he faithless as a daily activity as well as a settlement event to help him gain gold. I would probably write in a mechanism where he runs the risk of being thrown out, or maybe he can only do it once per settlement as a daily activity. This would definitely need experimenting with to prevent a player from farming gold in a settlement.

Hopefully this is helpful, I'm looking forward to see what ideas others have as well.

Happy questing and may your warhammer always roll 6's!

Re: Warrior Priest

there is a whole host of reasons why the WP sucks.
rarity of hammer weapons there are only really 2 or 3, an extra one if you count the orc "well 'ard weapons" which can include a hammer.

This *includes* the ones that are pants!

I found the idea of rebuilding him appealing and decided to do that, when I did it I thought up WP's of the other gods too and instead made a single WP who could choose which God to follow and got different stuff depending on which god you chose.
(I had to make a weapon for each god too so the hammer of sigmar wasn't the only one. mission accomplished on that score I feel)

if you want it I can copy n paste it in here or in the house rules forum?
it is quite involved as I almost entirely re-wrote the character, I didn't change the ring of Jade much though as I always thought the character is a secondary healer and not the main one.
(this changes if you play the priestess of Shallya, she is pretty much a healer as she doesn't take lives lightly. luckily undead and daemons are not alive)

Haha! Scathing review! Yes, i guess it was! But i do mention in the comments:

"On a long list of 'Things To Do' includes revising this Warrior. I think some minor adjustments will have a huge impact. He's the Warrior you want to love, but can't."

if a review of the WP is not scathing I would suspect the reviewer had not actually played the character emoticon

at the very least some form of service at the temple where you could get a weapon re-forged into a Warhammer so he can get a decent weapon easier would be useful.

posticon Again?!

Here we go again.
Is it just an inherent mistrust of spellhurlers?!?
All of them in this game, at one time/place or another, are considered "broken" one way or another by a great variety of persons here, there or somewhere in between.

<<EDIT>>

Never felt any WhQ adventurer was simply the sum of their character traits.
Their "gear" is also a critical component of who they are and what they can do.

<<EDIT>>

<<ADDED>>
Edits are here because I felt my honest and forthright reply to this topic would be labelled as something else - something negative probably.
Someone here decided to go all chaos storm at me with no provocation at all for same sort over at BTGM.
Why should I expect different here?

Re: Warrior Priest

At the mention of the Warhammer, I thought
about "Holy Aspects" (runes) for the WP
warhammer! Maybe the second time you roll the
same thing on the Prayer Table, the warhammer
gains that aspect permanently? That could
make his weapon powerful. One of the effects
on the table gives +1D6 + BL Wounds if the to hit roll is a 6.
With the warhammer's 6 to hit ability (+1D6 W), that
would be Damage Dice +2D6 + BL Wounds!
Take that, foes of Sigmar!!

The Jade Ring issue. What are the odds of rolling doubles with 3 dice?
What are the odds of double 1's?

And lastly, the WP does not "hurl" spells.
He gently lays "Blessings" on himself or
other Warriors. emoticon

Re: Warrior Priest

Had a few Quests play-testing my ideas.
WP seems to be able to cast 1 spell per
turn but it's not always the one he wants.
(just like the Wizard who must use what power
he has to cast a spell and may not be able to
cast a certain spell on a certain turn)
It usually worked to see what Blessing was
successful and then "lay" it on the
Warrior that would most benefit.

Anyone else have any play-testing results?
I would be most interested in any feedback.
Pleez help me save the Warrior Priest! emoticon

Re: Warrior Priest

A friend and I actually had a lot of fun playing with a Warrior Priest and a Pit Fighter. I do not remember the other two Warriors we had in the game, but those were the only two that could heal.

We kept falling back on the Pit Fighter's Heal-Itt Potion whenever in dire need and the Ring of Jade did not heal sufficiently, which was a good bit of the time! emoticon

I mostly like the Warrior Priest the way he is, BUT, I would highly recommend that he NOT be used as the party's only healer.

Re: Warrior Priest

WP: wizard fighting ability, poor "spells", rubbish and unreliable healing ability, no skills that improve any of the above.

I honestly think it needs a re-write.

but if you want to stick as close as possible a fix would be to give him a new characteristic which acts like stored power for a wizard (lets call it fervour) but which you use after the roll has been made.

that way you can add enough to make the blessing successful.

then give him a straight up healing blessing, either in addition to his normal blessings or replace one of the current ones.

keep the uses per turn as they are, invent a skill table for any level up when they do not get an additional blessing/use of blessing and he can remain as he is.

that being said I see no reason the WP cannot wear armour and has to use *only* a Warhammer.

I've made my own WP personally and folded other deities into it so they all use the same basic guidelines just unique blessing and skills table along with prayers, news and items in temple tables.
(Shallya goddess of healing, Morr god of the dead, Ulric god of winter and ferocity in battle, Myrmidia goddess of skilled battle, Ranald god of thieves plus Sigmar)
