The quest of Quest

I thought I'd record my Warhammer Quest related efforts in a log, so here it is! It will be painting minis and dungeon making based so hopefully picked the right forum.

My daughter will soon be old enough to play games with me so what better game to play than WHQ! So my crazy idea is to have a whole WHQ world ready to give her and hopefully she will be as fascinated as I was when I was a kid.

The end game is to have a full 3D dungeon with enough monsters to populate all the monster table levels, fully painted. This is a huge undertaking and obviously this is a time scale of years! I thought keeping a blog would keep motivation high from like minded people, instead of my missus who just thinks I'm nuts!

My first step was to sort through the game and find out what was missing. The game was well used but thankfully mainly intact. Some tokens were missing so I made copies and mounted them on card. Some of the various cards were missing so I printed some off and stuck them to ordinary playing cards and they blend in pretty well.

All the board sections were present, but the adventure book was absent. eBay took care of that.

Minis wise the barbarian was gone, as was the elf. I found an elf mini at a boot sale (cost me 50p), I've no idea where he's originally from (lord of the rings maybe?) but he struck me as Elf-esque so he's the elf now! The barbarian was picked up on eBay. As the heroes will be used in every adventure they were painted up straight away. I'm not a great painter but was happy that these guys were at a decent tabletop standard. By the time I've painted up all the beasties from the lists I should be a painting master and they can be redone ha ha.

Most of the monsters were present, and all of the doors. Some critters were missing, and eBay prices I think are outrageous to replace them. So I am gonna be making do with what I have for these, keeping an eye on eBay if a group comes up cheap (no way am I paying £4 per rat!)The only other gap was a Minotaur, so I bought the chap below, prepainted no less! Will make a good mino champion when the time comes. I got another original WHQ mino for cheap soon after, so that's 3 minos and a champion ticked off.

My next steps are;

Finish my dungeon - Made a decent start but some details to go.

--Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

Paint up all the monsters from the base game - can play the game with the cards with a fully painted set this way.

Get all the monsters for level one monster table - eBay like crazy ha ha.

if you're aiming to have all painted models for each level that is a very challenging undertaking!
great work on the board sections BTW.

we introduced my son to the game when he was about 9 I think, he loved it.

most of my posts may run into essay length. I find that for a lot of queries/feedback context is important and that is why this happens more often than not.

have a great day :D

Yeah i am thinking years of painting to get them all done. A lot of work but hopefully enjoyable. I am hoping that as it's lots of variety and never more than a dozen of each model it will never become laborious. At the moment my shift pattern means I get more time painting than meeting up for game so a lot of painting to do is a worthy challenge.

Thanks for the kind words on the board tiles, will get some closer photos once the details are in.

Glad to hear your son liked the game, I'm really hoping my daughter loves it too. She's already fascinated by the models but the ones I've let her have have promptly been destroyed so she's definitely forbidden from the WHQ box for now ha ha.

Re: The quest of Quest

Work has been crazy this week so only put a small dent in the painting I've got to do.

--Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

All the critters I have are done, and after my previous moaning about the cost of them on eBay I managed to find a bundle for less than £3 that brings me up to full complement all bar two rats so happy days!

--Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

I wish I'd painted the spiders a bit more colourfully in hindsight.

--Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

Gobbo archers done. More to do once I get onto the monster lists.

Next up are the 3D details for the board when they arrive, then finish the extra critters, goblin spearmen, orc archers and warriors, minotaurs and skaven. Hopefully next week isn't as manic as this one has been and I can get a good chunk done.

Ps apologies for the rubbish photos!

Thanks very much!

Goblin spearmen done. Will be adding shields as well but they will be done en mass and glued on later.

I really need a new recipe for green skin before I start the orcs. I've been using the advised process from the new blood bowl painting guide, but it looks a bit too day glo for the Orcs methinks.

I also need a light box or something cause the photos make them look worse than they are!

Doors also done. Once my terrain bits have arrived I'll get them painted and the dungeon will be ready to rock.

Next week should be a lot less busy at work so I'm aiming for the orcs, snotlings, and last of the critters to be done.

A good day of painting done. I got the rest of the critters done, and a bit more.

--Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

All the skaven clan rats are done, plus their shields. They came out really grimy and dirty so perfect for skaven!

--Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

Minotaurs done as well.

--Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

Going to pick up a few more paints before I tackle the orcs and snotlings.

Looking good so far, I look forward to seeing the rest of the models (and have that nagging feeling that I should start painting more of my own WHQ monsters).

Re: The quest of Quest

Thank you very much!

Well I used up the last of my allotted hobby hours for the week ha ha! But managed to get enough monsters painted to play the base game now.

--Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

Orc Archers.

--Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

Snotlings.

--Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

Goblin spearmen have had their shileds.

--Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

--Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

Orc hand weapon guys. Decided to paint up the orcs I bought to round out the level one list along with the big uns before the ones from the box game.

--Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

The whole motley crew!

The dungeon details have been despatched so hopefully be here soon. I've got the models for level one monster table now, so it's time to start chewing through those next week. And will get a few games in as well I hope.

Re: The quest of Quest

So the monster list work begins. I'm tweaking the lists a bit to cut out monsters that are either too expensive or that I can't find models I like, and will sub in ones I do, like various lizard men.

First up are the ogres. This box was a Father's Day gift from my little girl and I really like the models so will be adding the other three ogres in down the line.

The dungeon is also now complete (at least all the original box tiles).

The material used is 5mm foam card. This was easy to work with and scoring it with a knife made pretty good cracks and detail on it. Thickness meant easy storage and that the height difference between corridors and objective rooms was never crazy. Plus the doors fit nicely with it so don't have to be based up and rendered unusable with the card tiles.

I've only ever painted minis before so this was all new to me, some came out better than others but overall i am happy with the effect. I used a cheap acrylic paint set, laying down a black spray undercoat then dry brushing layers on, adding either white or yellow to lighten the tone depending on the room. I tried to keep it like the light source was in the middle from the lantern, or other sources in the objective rooms. Agrellan earthshade was used to strengthen the tiles and details.

--Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

Fire chasm room. The lava flow was created with polyfilla smudged down haphazardly, came out ok. The dragon was a kids toy I got for £[sign in to see URL] repainted as a decaying bronze statue (thought it would look rubbish gold like the original tile).

--Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

So the fountain turned out to be a wee bit small!

--Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

The fighting pit.

--Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

Heroquest Tomb!

--Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

The demon altar.

--Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

The tiles from the expansions are the obvious next step, then some of my own ideas for tiles I have brewing. I saw on YouTube someone modelling 'points of interest' as wall sections to match various event cards, so obviously I want to make some of those as well ha ha.
