Though no expert, I gather that Pygmies as fantasy characters aren't terribly well spread, probably because of the real-life connotations.
Real life pygmies live in the Central regions of Africa, but according to my African History tutor, referring to them as pygmies is construed as racist by international and/or American academia; a field which is very touchy about things like this (you also can't say 'Tribe', you have to say 'Ethnic Grouping' etc.)
I have seen pygmies referred to as 'Dark Halflings' in fantasy circles in the past.
