session one of my new group!

okay so I've canned D&D and intended to start on WHQ fortnightly (with the other fortnight having an evening of stand alone games whether board/card/whatevs) but it has taken a while to get started (real life gubbins getting in the way).

but last night the game started, I've got some fan made and homebrew stuff I wanted to playtest, but I always thinks it makes sense to make the party at least half standard warriors.

however that didn't happen so we ended up with a standard Elf, a runesmith (which I found on this site), an intrepid explorer (homebrew character which is essentially Indiana jones!) and a witch doctor (idea stolen from Diablo 3).

we had a weird dungeon that just went corridor x3 then room x4, fought snotlings, then a lone ogre (didn't get a turn), then some giant rats.
then an event revealed an extra objective room which would reveal monsters and a trap (my own event table and traps table). the monsters were 8 snotlings, a savage orc shaman and, bad luck roll (66-66-something) so a level 3 enemy: 2 giant scorpions...
first turn into this fight 4 orc archers showed up too.

killed them after a while and went a bit more to a T junction which led, in both directions, to another T junction! (what were the makers of this dungeon thinking!!)
ended session with the door to the objective room open but not yet entered.

(there was also a brief fight with 10 skeletons in which we were trapped with the least combative warriors fighting a rearguard and the front guys having to run into a room, setting of another event card, it worked out in the end though)

I intend to keep this up to date as I can.

happy gaming people!

Edited to add: we also found an abandoned shrine which healed everyone once we slew the skeletons and then encountered an old dwarf spirit who warned us of danger that lies ahead.
at some point in the rest of the adventure we can choose a monster roll or an event roll to just not happen.
as we're about to enter the objective room I think that is a good thing, no giant scorpions this time please!
I realised after the game I forgot one of my witch doctors skills which would have totally changed the way that skeleton fight turned out, still better remember it for next time!

Re: session one of my new group!

the perilous quest continues, the objective room was scantly guarded
(roll 1D6 on advanced objective room monster table was a 6: 2 rolls on level 1 table. 11 snotlings for the first roll, second roll was 11 so a roll on the level 2 table which revealed 12 hobgoblins)
they showed up with an ambush and promptly gave our heroes a minor shoeing!
next turn a 1 in the power phase revealed 10 giant bats, but they could only ambush Indiana Jones as they flowed out of the objective room.
the next few rounds were a bit tense with warriors being beaten mostly senseless just to be healed within an inch of death and the monsters slowly fell to the warriors blades and spells.
finally all fell dead to the floor, the sword was dipped into the fountain of light and emerged with the name Bardin engraved upon it (my sponsor as it happens!)
the party then embarked on an epic journey to civilisation...6 weeks to a city which turned out to be about 24 weeks of travel: featuring a plague stricken town (luck re-rolled this one!), a tripped over log breaking my characters ankle and adding 2 weeks to the journey, a witches cave, pool of dreams, two double backs to the dungeon entrance, forest goblins on spiders, a chapel, a fire that raged through the warriors camp and finally a ravine that collapsed blocking the way requiring hiring local labourers to make progress!
I ended up 420 gold lighter by the end of that, but +2 permanent wounds better off.

city has been reached, we're currently moving money around and working out what we can afford/should buy but that will be done next session

Re: session one of my new group!

city was done, new armour and other weapons all round except the witch doctor who doesn't really have much equipment to buy.

we enter a new dungeon, the dice have decreed that all four of us have a dark secret which is going to be problematic...

one: infected by lycanthropy, whenever a 1 is rolled in the power phase the warrior makes an attack on all adjacent models, friend or foe!

two: an exceptionally dangerous foe is in the objective room and you want to kill it, possibly no difference, possibly the highest level of monster that should show up is another 1 or 2 levels higher! if this warrior kills the monster(s) revealed by this roll they get double the gold.

three: another band of warriors are trying the same mission and you want to beat them. roll a D6 whenever monsters show up, 1 they have been reinforced and roll twice instead of once. 2-5 no difference, 6 the other warriors have been here and mopped up! halve the monsters that appear and no treasure item is found.
once the 6 has occurred this result persists for the rest of the adventure and there is no treasure in the objective room, but you can retreat out with no consequences
(I use consequences in games for failed missions)

four: cursed potion! warrior rolls a D6 whenever monsters appears and has the following effect for the rest of the fight. 1-2 -2 to hit, 3-4 no difference, 5-6 +2 attacks for the rest of the fight. you can have more than one at a time!

so first card is a room and the event is a hypnotic pattern which entrances models in that board section: roll D6 3+ nothing, 1-2 model cannot act and has a WS of 1.
monsters will not enter the room.
another event card is triggered which causes magic to go haywire but nothing actually happened because nobody was harmed and we only gained healing powers for that turn.

next card is a room, before we enter a 1 is rolled in power phase revealing 7 bloodletters of khorne, which appear inside the next room (as they will not enter this one). thus begins a hit and run attack from us combined with spells and ranged attacks (3 of us have them for once!)
eventually we whittle them down enough to consider charging into the next room and this is where it all goes wrong.

one warrior decides to fall for the hypnotic pattern and start drooling while staring into space. for three whole turns...this is also our secondary healer!

in the next room the walls turn out to be covered with mirrors which we choose to ignore, until later.
then skaven assassins appear (66 roll makes level 3 enemies appear!) now we're really in trouble as their assassinate skill promptly kicks in and drops everyone in this room to zero wounds in the same turn.
meanwhile the secondary healer is still drooling.

we thought it was all over.
then the elf noticed he had a dawnstone! brings him back to life, he throws out some potions, all he has as it happens, and we're back in the game.
chaos dwarves with blunderbusses show up in an attempt to shut us down, but my warrior stops dribbling and throws himself into the fray, keeping back enough mana to heal the main healer who is a dwarf runesmith.
after two cracking turns we slaughter all the assassins and most of the daemons then settle in for the slow but safer chaos dwarf slaying.
once that was finished we searched for loot (one warrior gained 270 gold and we found battle boots and an undead bane) then we decided to play with the mirrors.

a double of our elf stepped out and attacks our elf...apparently an elf shield becomes annoying at this point!
my characters reflection gives me a treasure: bugmans XXXXXX a princely gift indeed!

we wrap up with us cornering the evil elf and trying to kill him, which is harder than you'd think but I think we will manage it in the end.

not feeling optimistic about continuing this adventure in all honesty but you never know those rival adventurers may save us before we get there!

thanks!

i'm always thought it would be fun to see how a party progresses but never kept tabs on it.

one of those "one day i'll do this" things.

realised after the fight that i'd missed the fact that skaven assassins have dodge 5+.... that would probably have killed the party, but whatever we'll see what happens next.

beginning to think the witch doctor is underpowered but handy in a tight spot as emergency healer, which was kind of intended, not sure what to do to fix it yet. *ponders*

Re: session one of my new group!

the game continued, our warriors found their way to the Objective room: a skaven laboratory!

dark secrets: lycanthropy was recovered from, having done nothing through the whole adventure anyway. the warrior warned of his doom rolled and the result was the highest level enemy would be 2 more levels higher...
we rolled on the objective room table and rolled a 1

normally this would mean a level 2, 3 and 4 enemy, but that dark secret made it a 2, 3 and 6 level enemy!
we were lucky in that it turned out to be 8 black orc champions and a black orc big boss: not easy by any measure, but a griffon or similar would have been much worse!
the other rolls were 3 gigantic spiders and two centaurs.

3 rounds later we died, the elf ran away and managed to be lucky on the escaping table.
he then travelled but a chasm blocked his path so he decided to head to the next adventure.
outside the dungeon were 3 other warriors awaiting their first quest!!

we decided to play the same warriors, re-rolled their abilities and the witch doctor became a bit more powerful (+1 to hit with his sacrificial knife from one skill and +1 toughness and +1 wound per battle level from another skill. he levels like a witch hunter so this was odd but beneficial)

we entered the dungeon and one of the first rooms we found was the flames of khazla, the roll indicated we had to fight a mighty duel and would earn double gold for doing so:
runesmith got a hobgoblin which we slew in one mighty blow
elf got...a snotling...also slain in one mighty blow!
the witch doctor got a pink horror of tzeentch which took quite some time, just to be replaced with 2 blue horrors which took less time!
the intrepid explorer got a minotaur! which was then re-rolled with a luck and a dark elf showed up instead.
at the same time 8 dark elves showed up outside the room and started fighting the warriors.
the explorer defeated his elf in 3 turns and then we all ganged up on the dark elves until they were all dead.

an unexpected event revealed the room we were all fighting in was enchanted with healing magic: every model regains D6 wounds in the power phase! but monsters always appear in maximum number too.
draw another card: monsters, but only snotlings and only 8 could fit in the room, we rapidly slew them and opened the next door, a stairway corridor.

another 1?! 12 skaven show up, we slew a few and then it was time to end the session.

we are in a better position to continue our ongoing quest towards fame, fortune and fluffy bed slippers I feel, although equipment deprived now with the runesmith and explorer having no armour/guns.

Re: session one of my new group!

we played one day later this week due to other commitments (larp kit making!)

not sure what happened all in all, it was a quick paced session, but i'll update what I can remember:

skaven did not last long, the healing room didn't help them as with WS3 and T3 and only 3 wounds they all died from one shot hits.

moving on we found a T junction and went left to find another T junction! each way had one card so we explored them both anyway and found a room each way.

each housed ghouls: 7 of them both times. ghouls are quite nice enemies I think, low WS but 2 attacks and T4 but only 4 wounds means they struggle to hit sometimes, do little damage, but can take no damage on a hit and require a good roll to one-shot them.

we slew them all though and none ran off. we found a blade of ensorcelled iron (+1 to hit!) and the grey armour of eshkalon (essentially D6 armour each time you're hit but if you roll a 1 is destroyed. that armour was *very* helpful as it happens)

later we fought some skaven storm vermin, which were pretty threatening compared to normal skaven, but we defeated them.

a lone centaur showed up at some point and, later, 7 orcs with swords. all of these were slaughtered where they stood and we all got to roll for gold a few times and found some too!

the session ends with us outside the fighting pit, just about to enter.

our mission is to seal the gate below Karak Azgal which is difficult: the spell caster rolls 1-6 dice and has to score a 6 but no 1's.
if successful: hooray the day is done!
if no 6's or any number of 1's then it fails.
every turn in the monster phase an event card is revealed if there are no monsters on the board.

I think the events worry me more than monsters personally!

hope you're all gaming away merrily.

Sounds fun so far.
Good luck.

Or as Old Warrior would have put it,
"Happy Questing!"

While I certainly agree in spirit, I think those particular words came from someone else. I think it might have been QuestingKnight.
