non-spell casting spell-like powers
just wondering how people handle these guys abilities when comparing them to things like dispel magic and magic resistance?
I mean things like warrior priests blessings, runesmith chants etc.
some of these books mention them specifically but some do not.
things like elf ranger spells are fine as they're covered.
the main reason I am asking is because normally they are weaker than a wizards spells (blessings and chants especially) but a wizard can cast a spell an unlimited number of times a turn (limited by power supply which I've found tends to advance very quickly due to item acquisition) whereas even the elf ranger has limits of a number of spells per turn so dispel magic in particular penalises him much more than a regular wizard.
(which is why he has the leet combat characteristics of course)
anyway: warrior priest blessings, in particular the one that gives warriors an extra warriors phase, are often as powerful as a spell anyway.
(this is partially a game balance query and partially a rules query: clearly a blessing cannot be dispelled, but other homebrew classes especially, often have "not magical spells but clearly very similar things" powers so yeah. discuss!)
--- most of my posts may run into essay length. I find that for a lot of queries/feedback context is important and that is why this happens more often than not.
have a great day :D

Re: non-spell casting spell-like powers
Yes! Thank you for this topic! We actually had this discussion before starting our current campaign so I too wonder how it is played by others. Our group consist of dwarf, trollslayer, brewmaster and warrior priest. We have not yet faced monsters with this ability, but when we do we decided that blessings are not spells. We do however play that magic items which contains spells will be resisted/dispelled. How we decide this is to ask ourselves: Is this a spell? Y/N/Maybe=roll a dice.

My opinion is that unless its very clearly a spell its not subject to Dispel. Its hard enough trying to keep a group without a wizard alive as it is.
If you get to a point where not having a wizard is actually a benefit then just consider it a game reward .
