Re: Introductions Please

G'day all, name's Tom, 27, originally from England but now living in Australia.

Originally got into the world of gaming and Games Workshop through my brother's copy of HeroQuest when I was about seven, playing games with him and my Dad, and about the same time got into Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone's Fighting Fantasy books. From there, I delved into Warhammer Fantasy Battles briefly but mostly played Mordheim and Blood Bowl - at that point I didn't have the money or the patience to collect and paint mass armies!

I dropped out of the hobby in my teens as everyone else seemed more interested in girls than gaming and followed suit, and eventually sold off all of my collection in my early 20's to cover real life stuff, but always had a desire to get back into it at some point. That point finally came about a year ago when I started dipping my toes back in. Was hugely disappointed when I first started looking into GW again to see the direction they'd taken (the fluff was always a major draw for me with WFB and associated games) so ended up buying a bunch of Mantic stuff and playing a bit of Kings Of War.

I've amassed a bit of a collection of Undead and Elven miniatures from Mantic now, but after about six months have still only played a handful of games - I just can't motivate myself to get painting such a huge collection of figures yet. So I decided I needed a new project, something that could get me back into the hobby side of things as well as the gaming, and having missed the Old World setting, I wanted something very character driven so I could delve back into that, while still being more of a miniatures game than an RPG. Having been a HeroQuest fan when I was younger, I started to toss up between that and WQ, but solo play, the more advanced ruleset and the fact that I found a whole ton of fan produced stuff still going strong online won out in the end, so here I am starting my Warhammer Quest adventure, much to the wife's delight!

The project's very new in the making at the moment, I'm currently playing with print and play boards and bits and pieces cobbled together from all over the place, but it's starting to come along and I've loved my first few solo plays. Having started the hobby from scratch recently I'm still very short of miniatures, so I'm focusing on starting to build up my bestiary at the moment, mostly buying second hand GW stuff through ebay and forums (I did miss GW minis!), and using 2D counters in the meantime. Eventually I intend to get my hands on an original copy, but I'm happy to bide my time until then.

As well as playing (just advanced my first group of warriors to Battle Level 2), I'm really looking forward to having a variety of models to paint, especially some of the old school GW minis I remember from my youth that I never got around to buying back then. I'm also hoping that being a more character driven game with RPG elements, it might be a bit of a gateway into gaming for the wife, but that's wishful thinking for now!

Anyway, I've rambled on long enough, but thought I'd introduce myself having lurked on the forums for a little while now, so I'll look forward to chatting all things Quest with you all soon!

Re: Introductions Please

Hello There, Marco 32 from Italy

I bought Warhammer Quest just some years after launch, but i started to play with friends only recently. I translated the rules in Italian and made some custom "monster sheets" and "warrior sheets" to make playing easier. We play in 4-8 people (there could be more willing to join) so it is a mess if we don't organize rolls and statistics.

I have all original parts, and i am (still) painting each piece by myself in free random time. I had to simplify the monster table and made the monsters miniatures "level up" to avoid buying too many (ex. Minotaur -> Minotaur champion).
I still have all the miniatures needed for the full original monster card decks Base/Lair/Catacombs.

Now Silver Tower is getting out, and this made me interested in completing the old collection (don't like the new one). I just miss 5 (3 by the next week, i hope) official character packs so i am starting to look around for the last boxed sets.

I have come there to share some ideas, if you want, and to search for the "last three" official packs (wardancer, chaos warrior, bretonnian knight) to give each friend a "single hero" to use and to complete the collection.

BTW the title fits; "The best dungeon crawl game ever!"

Hi, I'm Gary.

I only recently picked WHQ from eBay, as well as the two expansions (Lair and Catacombs). I've long desired this game, so I was glad to get it for what is a bargain these days.

I'm still trying to absorb all the variations and custom rules, and I'm still working on the various miniatures.

I really enjoy dungeon crawlers, though I'm late to the genre (about 10 years of playing). And this really seems like the one that no one has really surpassed.

i'm a bit of a fanboy but I think this is true.
I've heard a lot about Descent from it's players, but every person I have known that has played both have said "Descent is good, but it is no WHQ"

most of my posts may run into essay length. I find that for a lot of queries/feedback context is important and that is why this happens more often than not.

have a great day :D

Hi, I'm Jack from Oxford, UK.

I've been a Warhammer player (VC, Nurgle WOC, and Skaven) for many years - but stopped at AOS, because I hate the look and feel of it, and the destruction of one of the best fantasy universes was unpalatable for me.

I tried Silver Tower recently and wasn't too impressed (mainly due to the levelling, or lack of). The release of ST convinced me that GW just don't have what it takes anymore, so I got myself a copy of the original from ebay (I always used to just play with a friend's set) and all the accompanying bits and I've been getting into it again. So I'm glad to see there's still a community for the classic game!

I'm a fan of dungeon crawlers. I've played Descent, Imperial Assault, Dungeon Saga, Super Dungeon Explore, etc., but none compare with WQ! The variety of monsters and loot, the depth of the world, the levelling experience, the risk of character death - all set WQ apart from the rest, IMO.

Re: Introductions Please

Hello everyone, I am Thomas from Bromley, UK

I bought a Warhammer Quest box, along with the miniatures and the Priest and Inquisitor expansions included for a small sum years ago, probably a decade ago now at a boot sale.

At the time I think I was too young to fully get into it, likely being barely a teenager and not having many like minded friends to play it with it became shelved until I dug it up a year ago. My friend and I live in the same area and getting tired of computer errors when we were trying to get a network going between our local computers on various games (does not help one is a over-geared gaming PC and the other is a 5 year old setup...) we dug up Warhammer quest.

And by golly am I glad we did! all last year we played a couple of campaigns and loved it, we play two warriors each and I am excited to join the board to learn how others play the game and to get new insights into how to get the most out of it myself.

We are just barely starting our fourth campaign now after last years campaign lasted for a long time (all heroes died after a few dungeons at BL 10, we started doing double rolls on all tables to make up for overpowered/over geared characters and the wizard vortexing everything emoticon ) and have created some of our own custom characters for flavor and just because we wanted to fully invest ourselves and have started using the expanded monster table on the museum which we have enjoyed thus far.

I am finally glad to join this community, I have been reading posts here for over a year now and have checked the museum for ideas on new rules, characters and monsters and thought i would step out into the light!

Good day to you all! emoticon

Welcome, Questicus! I am glad you are enjoying the game!

Sadly, I have never played with others up through BL 10 -- only done that solo and not very often. I find there is a lot to manage at higher levels, especially in solo play (with no one to help remember all the special rules).

Re: Introductions Please

Hi, I'm Rob from London. I recently started playing WHQ again after many years (last played in 97 or 98). I was inspired to pick up a copy of the original box recently after being so horribly disappointed with Silver Tower (AOS is terrible, lack of flavour or progression is terrible, game mechanics are dull - but at least the minis are nice and I can make use of them).

I've just had a first session with my usual Imperial Assault group - which was great fun (just as I remember) and went really well.

I'm GMing (I always feel you can get more complex and in depth puzzles, better monster challenge and a MUCH better narrative structure with a GM) and have been working on a campaign set in the Old World. Any suggestions on useful resources for improving what I've written so far would be appreciated.
