Introducing family to Warhammer Quest.

During the week my stepson came through to visit, and asked to try Warhammer quest. He's always been a keen video gamer, and over the last year or so I've regularly played him at Blood Bowl on the computer and he has been playing D&D with his own friends. To break him in gently, we played a starting quest with the basic warriors, my eight year old was the Barbarian and elf, I was the dwarf and he was the wizard.

The dungeon started out fairly slowly, the first five dungeon cards were corridors and only one room with the scorpions event.

The next dungeon card was the Circle of Power room and, true to form, the Ones started. The next few turns became a blur of Goblin spearmen, then archers, then bats, Orcs, snotlings and more orcs. We all had a great time cowering every time my stepson had to roll for power. We did eventually make it to the Objective Room, but the horde of monsters were finally too much for us, and the party all died, my dwarf finally succumbing to a horde of giant rats (another one in the power phase, surprise, surprise).

It was a great first dungeon for my stepson, it summed up the Warhammer quest experience perfectly (which for me is ones in the power phase, always getting 3 minotaurs and dying before the quest finishes). We played another quest after my daughter went to bed, this time Ranger Knight, Imperial Noble, Wizard and Pit Fighter. This time we won, and my stepson seems keen for more games of Quest. It just goes to show the appeal of this game, which can still pull in gamers after 20 years.

It was a great game, and all with just the starting game, straight from the box! My daughter and I had a follow up game last night, she had the Noble and the Elf, I had the Ranger Knight and the Wizard. The mission was return the staff (Objective room roll and event card in objective room) and as well as hordes of orcs, goblins and snotlings in the objective rooms, I managed to roll seven ones in the Power phases while we were there. Miraculously (or more likely, due to healing hands) we survived, for a grand total of 11 treasure cards.

It was very funny when my daughter kept telling me off, "Daddy, you're REALLY bad at rolling for Power! Stop rolling ones!"

Brilliant!

we have a player who was temporarily banned from rolling the power phase due to 6 turns of consecutive 1's being rolled.

doesn't help that his roll of healing 2D6 wounds never exceed a 4!

I have once used the entire event deck in the first 3 corridors due to bad rolls, although the party survived that due to good positioning (a 2x2 block) and no ranged enemies or spell casters arriving.

most of my posts may run into essay length. I find that for a lot of queries/feedback context is important and that is why this happens more often than not.

have a great day :D

Bravo Inh!

My sons love this game.

My wife has played since '95 with me.
What she does not like is the level of cut-throat play my sons inspire in the game these days.
She says we played much more nicely back in the day.

As far as the PPh, we just do not get more than three or so "1"s in a row.
Must just be us.
